Seahorses have been found in the Thames estuary in a sign that the water is becoming cleaner and warmer, it has been revealed.

The presence of a breeding population has been kept secret until now as they were not protected, said scientists from the Zoological Society for London.

However, the short-snouted seahorse, Hippocampus hippocampus, received legal protection against being killed, injured, disturbed or taken from the wild in February.

The species is rare but it is found along the south coast. The discovery of five seahorses in the Thames estuary in the past year is thought to indicate that a breeding population exists.
