I’m making a door to cover the former microwave cupboard on our AutoSleepers Kingham, I bought a cut door, hinges, handle etc from AS so as to match the rest. The door and cupboard is made from 12 mm thick chipboard. The hinges are so thin as to be difficult to measure the plate thickness with a tape measure, so let’s assume 1mm.

Ideally a Roundhead screw 10mm long and as large as possible diameter would be ideal. All I have found so far are 12 mm long screws. I am wary (sic) of the screw breaking through the “wood”

Can anyone advise the best screws to use and where to buy them.

Thanks

Try ebay. Put in search for very small screws. Should find some 10mm and under

Is there an existing cupboard door that you remove the screw from and measure it against the ones you have?

I would use piano hinges with lots of little screws. It will take more work as the side on the door needs to be rebated to get a flush fit but it will never work loose.

Piano hinges don’t have the “action” we need, but I understand the principle.

EBay Pozzi Drive self tapping screws. Few different sizes below 9.5mm will be ok. Just drill a small hole first dia centre of screw. Try on a piece of scrap first. Tape on drill at required depth. If you try with wood screws the Mdf will just bulge up. You need a pilot hole.

I have been pilot drilling the holes for the screws to repair the damage by fitting blocks between the horizontal and vertical boards to avoid damaging the chipboard.

Tomorrow I’m going to Halfords to pick up some self tapping screws.

Thanks for all the input.

Yes, you need something to keep them open, which is another thing to buy and fix but all our doors use piano hinges and are all solid after 5+ years.

You could consider glueing dowels in place and screwing into those. It depends on the quality of the wood I guess, which you probably won't know until you start drilling into it. :)

A that short length I would suggest the courser the better. Fine screws will pull out easier.

Once you have a final position and tightened the screws run a pencil around the hinge plate, remove, then use spray glue on the hinge & woodwork. Refit. They'll never loosen but can still be removed.

Cannot understand Autosleeper using doors made from chipboard which is of course quite heavy and not great for holding screws. The doors I used in my conversion were surplus Autotrail curved doors and are lightweight but more importantly have solid timber where the hinges fit.

Sorry for the late pick up been a tad busy.

You can pick up Reisser screws probably 3.5 or 4's in size.
Measure the cabinet thickness that will give you the length of screw required.
My guess is it will be 12mm I'm sure they do that length.
These are quality screws with a good "bite" on them.

I’d suggest using 4mm Euroscews
Great fixing strength
