After some advice please ;) We are intending to head up to Scotland for 3 weeks or so in mid September & wonder if anyone has any must see places or locations to stay at? 2 Seniors with a dog who enjoy walking, not intending do attempt the 500. Thanks in advance

sites or off grid? Willing to go on ferry or not? walking as in strolls or hiking up hills?

Probably mainly sites
Yes to the odd Ferry
Up for reasonable hikes

There is a nice site outside Oban . Old railway path you can cycle along. Bus service into town. If you like shellfish the shack on the harbour is amazing. Also boat trips around the lochs etc.
Our first trip and weather was good.

Head up loch lomond then round to Inveraray, Lochgilphead, Oban, skip Fort William unless you need drugs. Then along to Kyle of Lochalsh. Loch Carron, Gairloch, Inverewe. After that decide as time will be running out. Loads of wild camping at all these places and some sites if you prefer. All this west area is pure Scotland and beautiful. The midges should have gone by then.
No matter where you decide to travel in Scotland it's all really scenic and I've always found the people very friendly. We've toured every part of this lovely countryside since 1980 and never tire of it. Enjoy.

Dumfries and Galloway (I like the Rhinns end but I'm biased) and Borders area for hills, forest and lochs plus Roman and more modern history. Arran, Mull of Kintyre, Glencoe or Fort William area (A drive up Glen Nevis followed by a moderate walk (with a small risky bit) up to the Steall flats waterfall is a delight). Dornie area, Skye, Great Glen, Mull, Cairngorm area, The Angus Glens, Black Isle area, Tayside, Perth area, East Nuek of Fife, East Lothian coast etc.

It's all there for you Simbadog.and where ever you decide to go, I hope you enjoy it. Note, The East Coast is drier with fewer midges but don't forget to pack the smidge just in case the little perishers are still active.

We've just returned from a fortnight on the east coast.

Started at Newcastle and got as far north as Invergordon.

Beautiful beaches and stunning scenery.

Stayed on THS's, CL's, permitted camping, harbours etc. 13 nights cost £135.

Back via Grantown on Spey, Tomintoul, Crieff, Hawick.
Sunshine all the way and no midges.

Enjoy!

North Ledaig?

If coming up the M6 turn left at Gretna. The Solway coast from Dumfries to Portpatrick has some lovely spots. You good do some time on Arran then take the ferry from Lochranza to Kintyre. After that you could head North to Oban and further if you wish.

North Ledaig?
We were there last year and the site is slowly decaying. Total lack of care with toilet block in need of skylights and new basins. Gardens totally neglected. Beautiful location.
Now just appears to be a cash cow for the owners who have been there for many years.

And if you are in the area I wouldn't miss the Kelpies.
I was just going to say the Falkirk wheel and then onto the Kelpies - one of my favourite motorhome holidays

As for turning left at Getna into Dumfries and Galloway - enjoyed the motorhome holiday there so much we moved there - gorgeous area!:giggle:

If you like hiking you’ll love Orkney - fabulous council run site in Kirkwall - Picaquoy Centre.

You beat me to it, spent 4 nights on Orkney last week, first and last on the Pickaquoy site which is a great site!

This is really good advice. Dumfries and Galloway is great, lots of great places to stay and wonderful countryside. Try using the forestry sites or community sites.
Arran is one of my favourite places as it really is Scotland in miniature. All this is on my doorstep too. If the Chunnel was closer I would be happier still .

Interesting how different folk see sites
I would rate this site and would be happy to recommend it.
People are looking for and expecting different things.
I was on a couple of sites last week. One that had good reports I thought was just ok. The other had a fair few negative reports that I thought was good.
Scotland in September/ October can be magic as long as the weather plays ball.

Just as Wiljoy says, I did that very trip a few weeks ago going as far as Ullapool then across to Rosemarkie on the east coast to see the dolphins there, spending the night there, then down the A9 stopping at Pitlochry for brunch then down to Blair Castle caravan park for the night before heading down to see the Falkirk Wheel/ Kelpies.

An alternative to going around to Inveraray carry on up the A82 Loch Lomond towards Crianlarich stopping off for coffee at The Drovers Inn at Inverarnan easily the most atmospheric pub you'll ever visit, then carry on up the A82 over Rannoch Moor and through Glen Coe which is a stunning drive in any weather, not to be missed if possible. I've drove through the glen hundreds of times in my life and it's never failed to blow me away! Just mind the potholes in the laybys' if you stop for a picture, they're often full of water and deceptive.
Whichever way you go have a wonderful time, hope the weather is kind to you. (y)

Bunree, just 10 miles south of FT William is a must, get the site without Awnings. Invermill near Dunkeld in Perth is our favourite site. Look up Granton, which possibly has the best Motorhome site in a Scotland. Just be cautious of the B roads.

We've used this site nearly every year since it opened. Last year's visit saw a marked deterioration in its presentation. Normally everything is imnaculate with all facilities cared for. A member of staff said that the owners had cut back so much nothing was cared for much now.

We have just spent a month tootling with our motorhome friends from Millport, Troon, New England Bay, Back Bay, Isle Of Whithorn, Wigton, The Dhoon Bay then over to Hawick, we weren't at any point short of fresh water or toilet dumps. Great wee route!
