They seem to be attracted to some people more than others. Mum came back from Loch Lomond covered in them from head to toe whereas I got none.

Do not let the midge talk put you off. Just take sensible precautions, ie covering up, head nets, repellent.
As somebody else said, stay by the sea, any breeze usually disperses the wee bu**ers.
My own favourite place is the coast north of Lochinver, campsites at Achmelvich (no dogs though) and Clachtoll superb for location.
Enjoy, in good weather there is no better place to be.
