Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
Loch Ken has a wonderful setup for Kayaks etc, they have a decent camp site & there are many Little CL's within easy driving distance.
Wild camping, well how many spots do you want? Glen Trool is awesome & its very easy to find space to yourself.
We use a wee CL just outside Castle Douglas which has 5 CCMC pitches & a further 5 camping pitches where you don't need to be a member. They have two heated toilet blocks with piping hot showers.
On a friday night, Sheena does fresh haddock & chips & she is a superb cook.
New England Bay is a cracking site on the Rhinns of Galloway.

I've always said that this is a truly undiscovered area of Scotland, the locals are welcoming & friendly, parking is generally free, even in towns.
