Beginners, got Doggy the van - March 2014
Advice please from experience Travellers
Thinking about touring Scandinavia including Norway (with 8m long MoHo) from late August, driving from Calais - France through Holland & North Germany to Denmark, Swidden & Norway, till End October, is it too late to enjoy Good Weather to visit Norway up to the North and to see the Northern Lights?
Many Thanks

We went that route last year... started early July and returned beginning November. The weather was good and we did see the northern lights on a number of occasions. We enjoyed it immensely and will be setting off again in a couple of weeks.

My advice would be to take as much food and alcohol as you can before entering Norway as both are expensive and, in the case of food, awful quality. The roads and older tunnels in the south of of Norway are challenging. The tunnels further north are newer and fantastic so this time we intend to drive up through Sweden and cross into Norway further up rather than driving up from right down south as we did last time.

It's a great trip - you'll thoroughly enjoy it!

Just left Norway ,very expensive and I found the roads and tunnels ok with 8 metre van but you will find most are toll paid , once you get passed Alta heading to the North Cape there's no LPG so fill up if you have refillable bottles. The scenery is fantastic ,but I found Sweden and Finland mainly straight forest lined roads. Enjoy!

We did 13 week tour Belgium,Holland,Denmark then up as far as Karesuando (Sweden) on E45 then down accross a bit of Finland back to Baltic coast of Sweden back to Oresund bridge into Denmark then Germany via Rodbyhavn/Puttgarden ferry
Had a great time. We started out early May weather good but towards the North a few mossies about but we were early enough to avoid the worst of them. Make sure you’ve got your Avon skin so soft

On Denmark's eastern coast and debating whether to go back to Norway again this year. (Been the last two years). The way things are going we may give it a miss. The weather has been hit and miss, and we know if we go over it will be miss, again!

However .........

Norway has limits on alcohol you can take in - Very large fines if caught - and we know someone with a motorhome that were fined on small border crossing from Sweden. Very expensive!
On a good note - Should be mozzie free though?

Would like to add, open an account to cross the Oresund Bridge to get a Bropas at least 24 hrs before crossing as you will save 50% , for us it was 335 dkk each way ... there is a toll to cross the Great Belt bridge , also 2 other tolls along the way which you are invoiced later ..3mths we were told but no other tolls all the way to Nordkapp driving up through Sweden route
Enjoy

If your target is Nordkapp, as Champers says, travel north through Sweden; much better roads, mostly toll free, plenty of campsites. Downside is that scenery is not as good as Norway, mainly forests and coastal inlets but if you are prepared to explore a little they can be picturesque too.
Take a side trip into Finland and visit Father Christmas at Rovaniemi.
Then travel south through Norway.
