A sad case but the way I read it they didn't see the V5 when they bought the vehicle? Why not? What excuse were they given?

Yes it could be a problem but I believe that if you take out a 'Gold Plated HPI Check' you would be covered in the event of any finance or accident damage coming to light at a later date.

I also believe that if you take adequate steps to make sure, such as above HPI check, that the goods you are buying are the sellers to sell, you would be entitled to keep tham as an honest buyer.

Just a thought
An unscrupulous borrower gets a log book loan
The lender is the usual ( apparently ) firm that does not actually register the loan agin the car.

The borrower then goes to a few other log book loan companies..
Defaults on the payments to all and does a runner

That car is nabbed by one of the firms who sells it.
Another firm grabs it back to do the same etc etc

I can see all sorts of fun and games could be had by one and all !!!

It would need several V5's though as I thought that the monies were in exchange for the V5
