Today an old scam almost caught me off guard. The caller (a recorded message) advised me that my IP address had been compromised and to press a particular button on my phone for it to be rectified.
I did not move but for a moment wondered if it could be real.
Sadly in a very un-British way, I put the phone down on her.

Agreed, only one button to press... END CALL button.
Or tell them you've always lived at this address and nobody ever promised you anything before.
Saves the effort pressing end call, they hang up

i love the double glazing sellers i let them waffle on tell them i would like new windows and then tell them i will ask if the landlord if i can have them this results in them hanging up cant understand that

Should let them finish then tell them you live on the 21st floor of a tower block and the lifts broken.

I was accosted by a conservatory company at a stop on the way home today.

I said only if they could put it off the balcony on the first floor. :)

I am apparently having a big problem with my telephone and internet today
I received a phone call this morning to say that someone was logging into and using my internet access and the helpful person wanted to send me a free code that I could download.
Then later today I also received a call saying my phone line was being compromised and would be disconnected if i didn't press key 1 on my phone.
I don't know how I would cope with all these helpful and friendly callers !

There's a particular female who calls. She uses different names and always asks me about the accident I've been involved in. The accident must have left me with memory deficits as I can't recall it.. Never mind I'm sure she'll call again.

Never answer the phone, never a problem! Funny they never leave a message to call them back.............

I LOVE these ones..

I get them all exited and they pass me through to an 'advisor'

Give them all the details and answer all their questions..
Right at the end I casually say I had NO idea I could make a claim..

Oh yes sir..

I will mention it to the other guys I race with

race?

Well yes.... It was at Brands in a formula Golf race

click burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I am a happy bunny.. I have wasted their time and cost them money.. good enough :-)

I've started to waste their time when they call as if everyone starts to the scams will end a lot quicker than if we just hang up or wait for the gov.to do anything

The UK gov obviously can't stop international calls but they don't make much effort to stop UK based ones.
I recently complained to the TPS about a marketing call and pointed out that the caller was breaking the law by withholding their number. The reply from the TPS was, because they had withheld their number then they had no way of tracing them !.

What would you expect them to do?

Has anyone ever had the one from the guy in a South of France Hotel ..

Came via email and it was asking for URGENT help to pay his Hotel Bill as he had been robbed and they had stolen his wife and child's passport and also his along with all his cards and cash. He needed £2000 to be sent via Western Union.

I really could not resist this one and sent him an email saying I would help.

Kept it going backwards and forwards for about a week saying I had sent the money but got the name wrong etc. and would have to ask for money back.

Eventually I asked him which Hotel he was staying in so I could ring them and pay his bill via Credit Card.

Never heard from him again so I must have upset him :)

The point is that they have not got the authority to trace the call. The government brought in the law to say it was illegal to withhold the callers phone number but have not given the TPS the authority to do any tracing so the law can't be enforced.

Curious, what do they have to gain by you pressing one of the buttons on your phone?

I always ask which car as there are several. When they start to umm and ahh I then say I'll transfer them to the chauffeurs' office as they will have the records.

Hi Everybody
Scams similar to these have been going on for years, I remember before these scams were widely known, I was contacted by a person by email who gave me a hard luck story, I can’t remember what the story was as it was so so long ago, it’s got to be late 1990's as in 1999 that’s the year I left that bank, but not for this reason.

The person concerned contacted me by email and gave me a story about why he could not cash this cheque.

He then sent me a cheque postmarked from Nigeria and said to cash it and then send him a portion of it and I could keep the rest.

I deposited the cheque and waited for it to clear, needless to say it did not clear and my accounts were frozen until I proved what I was saying was the truth. I’d kept all the emails and showed them to the bank. They passed the case onto the fraud department.

I went round to the police station and told them about it and got a reply saying, “What the hell do you expect us to do about it” I did feel foolish.

I think this was before they had perfected the scam, as I think everybody would wait for the cheque to clear before thinking about sending any cash to anyone.

You live and learn.

Best Wishes Tony

Another of my favourites.. Lots of variations....
I ask them for a rough location so I can get money sent to the right office..

When they reply I say something like

Wow ! Thats lucky.. We have an international convention in the area. I will get one of my colleagues to drop the money at x office in x street

They will usually reply asking when

I say the convention is fairly busy but I believe that they will be able to deal with it Friday..

Then later mail them again saying that as luck would have it the Brit reps are staying almost opposite the office..
By the way, what department do you work in ?

Some non committal reply from the mug at the other end

Well all the brit guys are from scenes of crime and armed response units.. maybe you know some of them?

They seem to lose interest about then

Without the CLI and/or an active call a trace would be impossible. From the recipients point of view the answer is a phone with blocking capabilities. We bought a BT8500 a few years ago and haven't received a single unwanted call since then.

The reply I received from the TPS was that they did not have the authority to trace the calls and they didn't say it was not possible. The police are able to trace calls during criminal investigations.

It might be possible these days but it certainly wasn't in the past unless the suspect line was tapped - impossible with International calls. Normally once the caller had released the call any further action was impossible. They could use a device that held the call from the recipients end but it was complicated to do. And both methods were expensive (one required a Court Order). As I said it might be possible now but only if BT have completed their intention to route calls using internet technology. I doubt they could do it with the more usual and less sophisticated electronic exchange technology. (I used to install / extend Telephone Exchanges in the distant past.) A phone that will stop it dead isn't expensive.

I had an Anglian salesman call me. He promised me a thousand pounds for my old windows, I said great, you can call around tomorrow to pick them up! I have had my windows replaced by another company. The phone went dead. I never did get my thousand pounds.
