If you just want to keep it simple, all you really need to know is:
1) the automatic satellite dish should lock onto the Astra 2 satellite if you want to watch BBC/ITV etc
2) you need clear line of sight to the Astra 2 satellite which is in the south-east quadrant (I always carry a compass with me to check no trees or buildings in the way)
3) the satellite signal from the dish goes to a magic box - this magic box controls the self seeking dish to lock onto the satellite
4) another cable then leaves the magic box carrying the satellite signal and then EITHER goes to a standalone satellite decoder (sky or free-to-air box) and then to the TV, OR direct to the TV if the TV has a built-in satellite decoder (like the Cello or Avtex TV's).
