More than toes wet now!
Searched through a number of previous threads on the subject (and bounced ideas off another Funster - thanks Andy) and think I'm up to speed on what I'm going to do.
It's a Snipe 2 and going to use Sikaflex 292i (4-5mm bed) to adhere and not planning to utilise screws. It's going on an Autotrail Frontier Savannah about 3 feet behind the rear axle centre.
OK, so the adhesive is around £18.00 \ tube (fair enough!) but the additional cost of Primer and Aktivator is horrendous (around £50:eek:)!
Thinking I'll need a couple of tubes of adhesive. What do others think?
Also, are the Primer \ Aktivator actually needed or are they just another manufacturer revenue generator?

If you clean the area thoroughly to remove dirt and wax, then abrade the surface with a scotchbrite pad. then clean again using pre-paint wipes or isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry. then sikaflex will bond really well without primer or activator in warm weather. put 5mm spacers around the edge to prevent the urethane glue being extruded by the weight of the mounting plate. allow 24 hours to set before mounting the satellite to the plate

remember, the only way that plate can then be removed is by manually sawing through the sikaflex

Thanks TheBig1
Exactly what I was planning around the preparation.(y)
Planning to use either some 12mm polythene tubing (beer line from the pub!) or the rubber tubing from the old gas pigtail (replaced earlier this year) cut into 4-5mm "Hula Hoops" stood on end in the adhesive under the plate.
Understood on the "one time use" status of the plate given hilldweller trials and tribulations on removing one!
Thanks for advice on the Primer \ Aktivator.
Any ideas on how much adhesive I'd need? Base plate is, roughly rectangular, @ 495 x 357mm.
Just realised my "theoretical" calculation was wrong and I came up with three tubes.

I done my snipe roughly as the big 1 mentions and its been on for 3 years with no issues.

Mounted my Smile with 292i, sanded the area with course production paper them cleaned with meths followed by alcohol.
2 years & 18,000 miles and it's still there.

Thanks Gerry lorger and Lenny Lenny HB
Any idea on how much adhesive you used to stick the base plate down? Don't want to buy too little and run out halfway through or too much and end up chucking it.
Did you completely cover the base area or just "stripes"?

I used one tube, a bead towards the edge then zig zags over the base. After it was fitted I went around the edge with some 291i I had around.

done right you need 2 tubes minimum. personally I would order in 3, as so long as kept stored properly and in date, an unopened tube can be used on another project

minimum is around the perimeter and a strip every 70mm. you will use a lot to put down an 8mm bead that will compress to 5mm. As the dish will be subject to wind pressure, especially when driving, I prefer the overkill approach

2-3mm will bond but not allow shock absorbtion 4-5mm does

My van is a PVC so has a ridged roof, I did it ZigZag on all the bits that would come into contact with the base plate and then round the edge,, I honestly can't remember how many tubes but sure it was one as its not a large surface.

Morning guys
Just a quick update \ feedback and a thanks for the advice \ input! :notworthy2:
Snipe 2 is on the roof and cabling run.
Used just under 3 tubes of 252 (changed my mind as Sikaflex said 292 was massive overkill). Got them from Camperco with a 10% "first order" discount and they replaced one as it was dented in transit. Would recommend them.
Cheers

My snipe 2 has been fitted like yours and has been up for 5 years almost. Nice bit of kit.
