Does anyone know which is the best sat nav to buy for a motorhome. Thanks.

I'm afraid "best" is a little subjective. You will get proponents of TomTom, Garmin, Avtex and Xgody all saying theirs is the "best", along with those who use apps on their phones and tablets. Down to personal preference I am afraid. I am a cheapskate, so I use a cheapo Xgody 886 from ebay, backed up by satnag who gives me live traffic from Google.

Co-Pilot GPS on a tablet seems to do a good job. Only been using it for a week but it lets you put in dimensions and weights. I don't think that inbuilt TomTom does.

I'm a happy Garmin 780 owner. It enables your vehicle dimensions and weight to be input and you can avoid tolls/ferries if desired. I do understand there are lots more sat nav options, but I'm sticking at the moment to what I know and trust (-ish).

We have cursed the woman giving instruction with Google maps on few occasions, but we did discover and stop to look around a small medieval hilltop village in the South of France on one of Google maps magical mystery tours.

For the new and nervous, how do you set it up to account for the size of the vehicle i.e. a Motorhome?

I'm currently liking my Garmin camper 770... Although the daft thing missed the Snake Inn by about 2 miles! (It was sadly closed anyway).

In settings there is a section for the vehicle you are driving. Just input your dimensions and save. I must admit though that my 770 is still a work in progress after two years! Very powerful and competent but quirky. I’m sticking with it in the hope that one day I will catch up with it!

IYO (in your opinion) 🙂
No in fact.. I've been caught out a few times by inaccuracies in Google Maps.

Just one example, look to navigate to Hautmont aire.. it shows on satellite view, it shown on street view, but map view is completely wrong and has been for many years, trying to navigate there would get you very lost.

There are/have been others, but I'm not going to list them all.

Where is that in the Google maps settings ?
It isn’t sorry. Was referring to the Garmin 770 where it is possible. Worth saying though that this is extremely cautious, sending you a long way round something you could drive carefully through as opposed to “impossible” - say low bridge.

I think a problem with electronic navigation devices is the way the destination is input. A lot of postcodes in rural areas are in the middle of fields or at least a few hundred metres from the desired location; so it's a bit of a blunt instrument. I tend to search for a destination using its postcode on Google Earth, determine its geo-coordinates and then input those into the sat nav.

I have used What3Words to get an accurate destination, and then Google Maps to navigate to it.

There's a code on Google maps too listed when you get a places details up, I only noticed it the other month.

Garmin 770, 780 and 890 are the top three Best Buys from Which. We have a 770 and it seems fine both in UK and Europe (although we did have a problem in France which in the end turned out to be because we hadn't updated the Garmin Express software on the laptop we use for map updates etc which in turn led to the sat nav deciding that for navigational purposes, France didn't exist! Still, that's why we always have a road atlas and back up navigation apps on our 'phones.)

I have the Garmin 660 camper, bought from a high street seller of secondhand phones, tablets etc. I paid £75 and think it is a bargain. You can put the dimensions of your vehicle in and it should avoid unsuitable roads, comes with lifetime updates. Mine did try to take me up a very tight twisty road in yorkshire (trying to get to Tan Hill pub) but took a longer but more suitable route. As mentioned above there is a 770 for sale in the classifieds which looks a reasonable price.

I have the 720. OK, but sometimes difficult to do things like update maps.
I've only had one issue with uploads and it had to do with the Aguri operating software. Contacted them directly (and they acknowledged the issue) and they had a corrective update out shortly thereafter. No probs with maps or safety camera updates (so far). I connect the unit to a small "boom" qube to improve the tone on Audio - works a treat (and can be done wirelessly too, but I prefer use the electric string that came with it).

By which time it’s too late to set off so sit back down, have a beer and try again the next day ......

I didn't think Google Maps recognized What3words..
On my phone, I open What3Words and enter the W3W address.

Click on "Navigate" and you will get options to use Google Maps, or any other navigation Apps you also have - in my case Waze.

Click on the Maps icon and Google Maps will open with the route highlighted.

I much prefer Waze via android auto in my car. Much better than the builtin sat nav.
It is good, and got us out of the pooh a week or so ago, but the American accent, and the distances given in feet ! :frowny: apart from that it's a very informative running commentary.
