I know this must be a much deliberated topic (but not for me and other new peeps).
I have researched the market, et al.... but there is nothing more valuable than the experiences and knowledge of those on this forum.

As some of you may remember (am still permenantly scarred !!), we almost lost the roof of our rented MH in Rouen during Le Mans week as le Tom Tom insisted we take that 'left turn'. I could go on but the upshot was.............. a bad move resulting 'all sorts'.

My question is...................... is there a sat nav out there which we are able to input all the relevant Height, length and so on in so much that when the route is planned it may give us at least warning of any of those impending dangers

yep ÂŁ50 chinese one that is as good as most tomtoms and garmins at much higher cost. plus get the right model and its got allsorts of extra features including rear camera input and video/music player
even the expensive satnavs are made in the far east, so comparable build quality too

If you have a smartphone with plenty of available memory then Copilot truck is an offline satnav app in which you can enter your vans dimensions.

or use the built in fm transmitter and tune the radio to that channel to receive it.

I fancy one of these myself there is plenty to chose from. What's the difference between them apart from price ? Also could I disconnect my rear camera screen and connect this ? As that would be a bonus for me too Thanks

I tried that for MP3, a little transmitter. You set it up, drive a while then hit a transmitter on your channel. It lives in the bottom of that dark drawer now.

The easiest way is get yourself a Tomton 520/530/720/730 from fleabay and visit http://www.gpsunderground.com or similar (just do a google search). You can turn the above into a full blown tomtom truck with the latest 940 european maps with just a few clicks.

We use our TomTom go live, when we purchased the MH I downloaded the camper maps to it, and I am very impressed. You can enter height, length, width and also enter maximum speed, so your eta will be a little more realistic.

My only criticism is that it is a little too wary in the route it selects, for example, I know that the quickest route between Farnham, Surrey and Ringwood in Dorset is the A31. The TomTom insists that I use the M3/M27 route.

Also the route will only be as good as the information that TomTom have on roads, so on occasions we have been directed to go onto roads that I can see are way to narrow for us to fit, but they don't have width restrictions in place, so the SatNav thinks that they are OK.

On the plus side, and I could be imagining this, the routes selected seem to avoid extremely tight corners. I have tested this in a few locations, where the quickest route would involve going around a very acute corner, and the TomTom goes the long way around, so that you get the shallow angle. My testing was only done in three locations, so hardly conclusive!

have used Garmin for years, latest one under ÂŁ100 first was ÂŁ800 back in 2000:coffee: What I like is the ability to plan routes on PC/Laptop and download to unit using Mapsource/Basecamp...that way we go my way and not directed down spurious routes! by a pretty dumb infernal machine:D I'm not that techy but have my head around the system.

One less gadget to leave in the van when I'm out and about! Plus I use it when walking, it's just a personal preference. It's also handy when connected to my radio as it becomes a media unit, satnav and phone all in one.

Can't beat Snooper we have had one for over 2 years and it has never let us down.. It shows you the Aires and even has photos. we had Tom Tom before that and it let us down big time in France. At the end of the day you get what you pay for and when you have an expensive piece of kit like a motorhome you want to be able to travel without worrying about the height of bridges and the width of roads

I have a Falcon sat nav, you input length + height + width of MH. Comes complete with 1000`s of campsites
ASCI etc and local points of interest all pre loaded. It also connects to my reverse camera. We have used it in UK and France...its absolutely brilliant...

I bought a decent tablet Asus memo pad me176cx it has built in GPS if you install Sygic Truck you can input height, length and width it has plenty of preinstalled poi's you can also install speed cameras (gpsunderground.com) so other than a satnav it is a great tablet to ÂŁ79
