Hello, we are planning on going to Sardinia in mid to late May. For the first time, we will be traveling with another van. The other couple are relatively inexperienced and we are showing them the ropes.

We much prefer to book ferries etc en route to allow more flexibility, but as we haven't done this route before I thought it best to be sure we didn't get caught out.

Advice welcome...

Thanks in advance.

We went to Sardinia in May 2012 and loved it. We found it better to book in advance as its a bit like uk ferries, look for a good online price and if you just turn up and pay on the day you could pay a lot more. If you have dogs the boat is very dog friendly. They say that dogs are restricted to certain areas and must have a muzzle. Take a muzzle but you won't need it , dogs go everywhere on boat. We were allowed to take our sun loungers up to the top deck. The return trip was hot and the boat was an ex cruise boat so they filled the swimming pool up. There are a good selection of ACSI sites all of a good standard. However many sites are limited to 3 amp electric. Beaches are fabulous, some areas are close to swamp like areas so mossys are plentiful. If you go on my blog and go down the righthand side selecting May 2012 I have a detailed account of our trip, click on pictures to enlarge. Link to blog below.

I booked last week for a crossing in late May. We are going Livorno to Bastia as at 4 hours it is the shortest crossing. We will then cross over to Sardinia by ferry from the bottom of Corsica which at the moment I'm not planning to book - but I haven't done all the research yet on that crossing yet.

The prices vary enormously depending on the time of the crossing - between £250 and £950 for our PVC. What I don't know is whether you can get the cheaper prices by just turning up at the port. My instincts suggest not but I could well be wrong. :)

The ticket (with Moby) is "amendable" for a fee, I've read €20, so we could delay or advance the return if we want but generally only by about a week at a time if we wanted to avoid the price hike of travelling on a busy day.
