My parents are off mid december and travelling down to the algarve from santander. They would really like to avoid the mountainous roads due to the time of year.Does anybody have any good routes down into portugal with recommends for stop overs and a nice campsite in the algarve for over the christmas period.
Many thanks..

hi

We have travelled to southern Spain from
Valencia to Malaga many times over the years. Only had a dusting of snow once as we climbed up from Bilbao. So that could be a good route for you.

But I guess those who travel to Portugal may use a much different route .

We travel this way usually in January From Santander head for Camping Fuentes Blancas Burgos, Camping Caceras then head in the direction of Seville then Heulva And straight through to the Algarve. All good roads.

It really depends how long they want to spend getting to Portugal and how much driving they want to do each day.
We did Santander to Castro Jerez then Salamanca then Estremoz then Tavira over 4 days and all on non-toll motorways. We used P4N and Search for Sites to check that places were open which in December …. some might not be!
Do your parents plan on staying in one place when they get to the Algarve or will they be moving around?
There are a few campsites that offer discounts for long stays but they might be wise to check first that there are still places available over the Christmas period. Some people will have already booked last year for this year. Again, Search for Sites and P4N should give more information.
I can recommend Campismo Ria Formosa at Cabanas e Conçeicão which is close to the Spanish border.

We've tried to get to the Algarve on a couple of occasions and not managed it, even on a 5 week trip. Travel along the North Spanish coast towards A Coruna, then cut diagonally across to the Spanish Portuguese border around Ancora and down the coast. Find so many nice places to stay we don't get far below Lisbon before we have to head back.
