Sadly, we lost our lovely Lurcher, Shona, this week.

She had not been good for quite a time - she became unwell at the Bath Racecourse Meet, last year. She was in and out of the vets all summer, for blood-tests, scans etc, and we thought it unlikely she would make Christmas, but she improved quite a lot.

Then one evening last week she collapsed and we took her to the vet, as it was clearly her time to go.

She had done quite well as she would have been 15 this month.

We were the second people to rescue her, 12 years ago. At that time she had never been on a lead, only once in a car, wasn't properly house trained, and was terrified of men. She got over most of her phobias, and ended up adoring me!

She was beautiful, and the gentlest creature one could imagine, but very prim and proper - the vet said that if she was a person, she would have worn a "twin-set and pearls"!

She will be sadly missed.

What a beautiful dog! She looks like a twinset and pearls ...... she was as lucky to find you as you to find her. There’s something about double rescue dogs (y)

What a beautiful colour :)

You have 12 years of memories to keep going over, photos to look at, reminders all over, especially when hoovering for a good few weeks yet :)

I know this because we are on week 8 since losing Lola, it is so hard, but you have absolutely done the right thing, not put her through any more suffering, you all knew it was time, Shona included probably

time will heal the grief then reward you with memories

Sorry to hear of your loss. Run free at the bridge Shona. X

Andy.

Lovely looking dog. Sorry for your loss.

I still miss one of our cats who died about 3-4 years ago now, even though she didn’t like me much.

Dogs are different.

What a beautiful girl, so sorry for your loss.

We are so sorry to hear about the loss of your dear Shona.

It is truly heartbreaking to lose a beloved dog and member of the family.

Hopefully you can treasure the happy memories and temper the great times together.

Sadly we think we will be in the same position soon...

I'm so sorry for your loss.
I have immeasurable respect for those who rescue any dog & you really are to be respected for coaxing your beautiful girl out of her shell, especially in her phobia of men, we had the same thing with a rescue pony which we took on, he'd clearly been battered & more than likely it was dished out by a cowardly man.
I spent hours in his company getting closer day by day until he realised that not all men are bad.
He is still going strong all these years later & is a very laid back pony.

Your lovely dog reminds me of a special dog which I grew up with, her name was Judy (well we had a budgie called punch) & she was a whippet cross, she had a golden coat too. I adored her & it broke my heart when she passed away, so I do know how your feeling.

Hold your head up, remember all the good times & fun you've shared with Shona, yes you'll be tearful but, these should be some smiles too.

Robert.

So sorry to hear the sad news about Shona. She was very lucky that she found you and was able to live a long and happy life with you. The bond you had proves how much she appreciated what you did for her.

A beautiful dog. So upsetting when they have to go but, as you said, it was clearly her time.

Thank you all so much for all your kind words, and support. My heart goes out to those of you who have also lost loved pets, and also to those who feel the inevitable day is approaching.

There have been lots of lovely comments, but a recurring theme seems to be about her “running” and also “happy memories”

Running and jumping was something she could do! She ran like the wind, and could easily clear a 6 foot fence. My daughter had two whippets, and to see the three of them at full speed was wonderful.

Also, lots of memories! Here’s one ………..She was originally rescued by my Aunt when she was one. She lived on a smallholding in the middle of the Gower, down a mile-long track. Amongst other animals (horses, goats, chickens, ducks etc) she had four dogs. She had always said that when she died, she had found homes for three of the dogs, but that Shona was such a handful, no one would want her and that she would have to be put down. I said that if that happened we would have her.

My Aunt reached a point where she was not coping and had to go into a care home. I went down to help her get things sorted, and as I was leaving she said “You said you would have Shona, so you’d better take her now!” It was a bit of a shock, and I had to phone my wife to tell her we’d got another dog!

I arrived home and coaxed her into the house, but she was very nervous. Unfortunately, when my son came home from work, he left the front door open and Shona escaped into the road. I spent ages trying to get her back through the gate, but she just kept running away. A passing police car saw my plight, and stopped to help. Eventually there were two police cars, blocking off the road either side of our house, and together with some of the drivers from the stopped cars, we got her through the gate, into the front garden.

She was too upset to come in again so we let our other dog Max - a very intelligent Labrador/Staffie cross - out with her. They sniffed around each other and after a bit when we called Max in, she followed him. From that day on, Max taught her how to behave!

When we went out the following day we came home to “Poops” on the kitchen floor, and Max barking loudly at her as if to say “It wasn’t me!!” She obviously got the message and was house-trained within days. After that, whenever we took her somewhere unfamiliar, we could see that she just watched Max, and then copied what he had done.

RIP Shona.

Twin set and pearls with a wicked little glint. So sorry for your loss. Run free beautiful Shona, over the Rainbow bridge.
