Bottom line seems to be that some folk aren't familiar with how to behave on single track roads - which is made worse by some of the roads starting to erode at the edges due to lack of maintenance. At least the Scottish Government is discussing the lack of maintenance, but if you haven't driven on single track roads I suggest checking out the guidance available. There's an introduction here
