Currently have 2 X 6kg Calor gas bottles and would like to replace one with a larger self refillable cylinder. So Safefill or Gaslow. Leaning towards Safefill but unsure with either in terms of refilling stations around UK and Europe. Funsters advice, experience welcome. Grrrr... Living the dream SMUDGER55

If you don't get a quick reply use the search engine, there's a lot been posted on this recently, and of course masses in the past.

I’ve got a Gaslow system and it’s fine. External filler port fitted to minimise any hassle filling up abroad. You need to plan your fill ups, but I’ve not had any problems. Sorry, no experience of Safefill. LPG locations via App or internet.

The filler will be the same for either supplier or you use an adapter as you would in europe. Seema few less fill stations in uk but loads in europe and you can fill before its empty. Gas is MUCH cheaper
Go for it!
Mike

One of the main reasons I bought Safefill is because i have an independant LPG re-filler just 2 miles away (y)
So that suits me fine as i can usually start any trip with 2 full 10kg bottles. Only ever had to fill up away from home once and that was in Germany, I opened the locker door, connected and filled. No issues but then again maybe not even noticed by the attendant...
The bottles are so light and easy to move.

Looking at the Safefill site, I cannot see if they have a kit that allows filling without direct link to the bottle valve. Gaslow have the fill kit which can be fitted to the external section of the van. I have this system, I would imagine if trying to fill directly on the bottle many garages would stop the fill. So unless there is a fill system other than directly onto the valve I can see problems for Safefill

I have 2 x10 kg safefills and have filled them in multiple locations both here and abroad , only been refused once in Spain by a young service station worker at a Repsol garage went to the next LPG garage about 50km up the road and had no problem

Safefill cylinders only have a single connection so you need to unscrew your gas regulator to be able to fill the bottle.

Yes I have the Handwheel propane connections on stainless steel pigtails
Very quick and easy to disconnect from the Safefill cylinders

Easy life for me. Just use Gasit (same as Gaslow except different colour and cheaper) and then never need to lift a heavy gas cylinder in or out of an awkward gas locker again.

.........you don’t have to carry heavy bags of charcoal either Pete ?????

SafeFill would be cheaper, lighter, and more flexible. Some think you may have difficulty getting them re-filled but I think they may be folk who chose GasLow. In my experience, I've had no problems getting SafeFill re-filled. As you will re-fill at home most often, start by researching your local area. Although the gas is cheaper, it may take some time to recover the outlay but you'll always be able to set out with a known quantity (full bottle) of gas and can get adaptors to refill across Europe.
There is no option to remote fill SafeFill (through the side of the vehicle). But you can take it in your car rather than the van for such, if that suits.

As is by now probably clear from reading this thread, there is a significant difference between the filling arrangements.

GasLow and Gas-it are both permanently fitted systems and are normally replenished via a separate filler point. The only action required is to attache the pump to the filler point.

In the case of the SafeFill bottle, the normal connection to the bottle for consuming gas needs to be disconnected before a LPG pump can be attached. It sounds as though some folk find it convenient to remove the SafeFill from the van and take it to a service station or other gas supplier in the car.

So in summary, one system will work best for some people, and the other system will work best for another group of people. ;) (y)

I too am looking at exactly the same issue.

One problem with SafeFill is getting hold of the bottles.

SafeFill do not sell on line
SafeFill only have distributors in Northern England and Scotland, which means for me in London it would be a 300 mile round trip to buy the bottles.

However: SafeFill bottles do see to be available on e-bay at around £180 for a new 10kg

We have Gasit with external filler port which I fitted to the top of the door (opted for self fit), the gas fitter who did my system check (for the insurers) said no worries.
We have filled our 2 -11kg cylinder quite a few times in UK,France, Luxembourg, and Germany without problems or concerns from the filling staff, in fact a couple of times they have had to help me on particularly strange filler styles (and there's quite a few)

So don't discount Gasit from your choice

Not sure if this right way to reply to your response, hopefully so. Thanks for your thoughts, decisions will be made before our next trip. Smudger55

With Shell closing their LPG pumps, it only be time before other petrol stations stop supplying LPG.
think about Diesel set up hob/heater from WAllis is very good pricy to start with you will have recovered a cupboard and you only have to fill one tank

Just surmising but if you fit a T piece and a valve before the regulator so it can be isolated you can then fit an external filler no problem???

Would have to find out what thread the fitting are.

Cheers Andy

why DIESEL...if you listen to all the doom and gloom merchants there will be no diesel pumps in 2 years never mind autogas What the alternative... electric or god forbid nuclear powered motorhomes.... The mind boggles

Diesel will be around for at least another 10 to 15 years in this country and until they can reduce the weight of batteries and get 450 miles out of a charge, HGVs will still need it.
I had thought that Hydrogen powered MoHo would be good because you could use the resulting water to flush your loo so save carrying a 90 ltr water tank.
