My sympathy on the loss of lovely, Maggie. Gone but never forgotten and she will be running free over the rainbow bridge, whilst you get on with your travels holding her in your hearts.

Never stop learning 😊
So sorry to read this, Maggie looks like a gorgeous girl. Sounds like you gave her the most terrific life with you and I am sure she knew how much she was loved. Just as importantly, you had the courage to give her the greatest gift at the end - and that is no easy thing. She will have had no stress, no fear, no pain; unfortunately it is our job to feel those things and the price we pay for the years of joy our four-legged family give to us.

Such sad news but I bet she had a lovely time with you knowing she was loved and cared for and no doubt gave you lots of love in return. It hurts like hell I know but it will get better, don't rush to get another dog too soon as you will need to bond with it and whilst you're mourning this can be difficult, just give yourself some time to come to terms with it all first then decide if another is the right thing for you.

One question if you don't mind me asking, what have you done with Maggie's remains? I ask because we have an elderly dog and may face the same thing ourselves when away (we usually bury ours in the back garden but obviously that wouldn't be an option) so it would be useful to know what the 'options' are abroad. We did have to have a pet rat put down once but she fitted inside a Pringles tube inside the freezer to bring back home, and another who we lost overnight whilst parked on Lindesfarne is buried in the dunes there.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words, it is very much appreciated.

To Minxy Girl, we have had her cremated, we were offered to have her ashes but decided just to take her personal effects, some of her hair etc and take that home and bury in the garden, next to the 20 year old cat that we lost in January last.

I am sure some of our friends thought us mad taking a 15 year old Lab away with us, with no plans on return. We knew she wouldnt make it back to the UK at her age and we were prepared to adjust our plans around her. However I can say with hand on a very heavy heart that she thoroughly enjoyed at least 11 weeks of the 12 that she was away and we enjoyed her being with us. Prior to this trip, she had never been out of Devon or Cornwall but she never batted an eyelid throughout.

To anyone contemplating travelling with an older animal, from my experience, dont let it deter you.

Again thanks

It’s never easy making that decision, no matter what age they are....it’s the last thing we can do to show our love for them.

So sad, bless little Maggie and you both....it is so hard.
We still shed a few tears for our furry family members who have passed, but we also talk about the many happy memories and smile as well.
Sometimes the gap in your life is just so huge that you compliment your lost friend by filling that gap.
You will do what is right for you when the time is right, just follow your hearts.

We know exactly how you feel and it brings a lump to the throat just thinking about it. We lost Molly (pictured) in August after 14½ years. She was one of the main reasons we bought our first motorhome as my wife said she would never put her in kennels. She travelled many miles in the van with us including 39 continental trips. She brought so much joy to us and was truly the most faithful companion you could ever wish for. Just the mention of "The Van" had her ears pricked up. Deeply loved and sadly missed but it does slowly become easier with time.

Sorry to read this, it's never easy as they are part of the family, in the past we have been at home and called the vet and buried them in the garden our last dog was 17  but things are very different when your travelling.
She had a wonderful life, and you have lots of happy memories.
Our thoughts are with you RIP Maggie.
