Size and weight of vehicle can make a big difference to the cost and available time can be a factor.

Hi Jon,
We intend doing the same countries above to Ancona. Where do you enter/leave Switzerland please?

Thanks
John

We'll be setting off for Greece in a couple of weeks time and going down to Ancona via Luxembourg and Switzerland. As we've done before, we'll cross the Swiss border at Rheinfelden (just east of Basel) travelling on the A2 through the Gotthard Tunnel and enter Italy nr Como.

We do the same as @Tykatem

You do need a vignette for swiss motorways but still way cheaper than France

Under 3500kgs = 40 chf for a year

over 3500kgs 25CHF for any 10 days in a year so just the days you are in Switzerland.

You can buy either as you cross the border or nowadays there is also an app

Just be aware that if you choose to use a different tunnel to get into Italy they are not included.

Jon

ps dont forget to fill up in Luxembourg.

And I recommend Han-sur- Lesse for a lovely stopover.

Do you you do the Gothard Tunnel, or go over the pass, that is the question?
The pass views look stunning and something weather permitting that we would love to do.
I do appreciate the 7KM tunnel is much quicker though, easier on the clutch & brakes I guess, providing of course the traffic ques either end are not too prohibitive.
I have read its best to always check the traffic situation as you can get stuck for at least 1/2 hours at certain times, advice also said leave early as possible both ways.
Happy Travels to all.

We've been over the pass once, but for time and convenience we use the tunnel which is a total of 16.9 km long

Weather permitting is the key phrase here - even in August!!

We used the tunnel as we were told snow on the pass and we’d need chains (May).

Weather ? Agreed, I did the grossglockner pass, which I'd been so looking forward to.
After leaving in sunshine most of the pass was done in must and drizzle
Could've been in Wales

Thanks Jon,
Both for the route and also the suggested stopover. I've already downloaded the 'VIA' Swiss app onto the phone and had a play around with it. We're over 3500kg and it looks straightforward enough.

I remember we went over the top once but had a strong smell of burning on the way down (even using engine braking - but obviously not enough!). Stopped and smelt the brakes, they were red hot. A break and a cuppa were needed to allow them to cool down before continuing. Views were great though!

Right after I posted that I then saw your previous post about it.

Ps Bad Sackingen right next to the border has the longest covered wooden bridge complete with the border painted across it. Worth a stop IMO

Thanks, always good to have something to call in on and view to break the journey. Cheers, we'll look out for it.
