Some NZ friends have asked for advice regarding Route 500 in Scotland in September. Not having been there, can I ask their main question: is it advisable to book campsites in advance? They will be in a campervan hired from, and dropped off in, Elgin. I'd be grateful for any advice on this.

Don't worry about booking campsites when travelling the NC500, there are plenty of wild (both marked and unmarked) overnighting places. There is a good Facebook page which caters for all motor home users of the NC500 https://www.facebook.com/groups/NC500/
We have used that page and https://www.facebook.com/groups/246972858789245/ to great advantage earlier this year.
