Is it discs or disks...... Anyway that shows you my motoring knowledge.

My 2007 Fiat ducato MH is going to a garage in sicily tomorrow to get the brakes looked at. What is a ball-park figure so I don't look to stupid when he quotes.

Cheers Marco

You could look on euro parts , put your reg in and it will tell you the cost of the parts to give you an idea what you’re in for.

@andyman

!Idiot alert!

When I put my reg no into euro car parts and it identifies my Fiat ducato 2007 2.3 Van and then I click on brake disks it comes up with prices for front and back....

Do I have brakes on front and back that might need done?

Yes, you might need both ends. But usually just front. They do most of the work.

Depends on age/milage.

If original and at ten years it is quite old for a set of pads - they may fail even if not worn down to the minimum dimensions.

What noises etc are you getting to think you need new brakes?

@MikeD An orange circular warning light on dash. When I looked it up it said brakes. They are a bit squeaky at front also.

I replaced the disc and pads all round on a transit a couple years ago... parts were from ford but imo worth it rather than cheaper .. not the sort of job you want to be doing every couple years.
anyway total cost was around £600 for parts alone.. but that was with a front wheel bearing as well..

As others have said - sounds like pads - but it's often advised to replace disc's as well. Most garages will want to do both.

They know the repair will be good and they will have no "come-backs" then. (y)

all things been equal and the vehicle getting used enough to keep the discs serviceable I think its reasonable to get one change of pads without having to change the disc...

I agree - but thought maybe discs 11 years old now and I assume a fair amount of miles on them.

Discs are cheap these days presumably because of increased demand for them. Modern pads are more abrasive than the asbestos-based ones they replaced. The larger proportion of cost is invariably labour so unless you're doing the work yourself it's well worth having the discs & pads replaced at the same time.

OK, here you go for Sicilian garages.....

Took MH to the garage at 8 this morning as asked. They promptly moved other cars around to get me positioned for the mechanics to have a look.

Get the first wheel off and indicate that the discs look good, so first good sign, none of the British deep intake of breath malarkey.

They then ask why I think I need new brakes..... Strange question I think but I tell then that a light came on in the cab... Etc.. Etc.

They take the second wheel off and there it is.... The electronics wire from the sensor thingymabob had been pinched by the brake shoe so was showing the warning light intermittently. He freed the wire... Taped up the frayed wire and put the wheels back on. Grazie mille 20 euro for their time and 10 for the mechanics to get a cafe cornetto.
