Is there any reason against travelling with any roof vents open slightly?

yes, if you leave them open air is forced under them and at some point they will break

Hi Les
There was a thread about this a few days ago. Some folk thought it ok to drive with a small bathroom vent open, whilst the consensus seemed to be that open vents invite disaster! Vortexes at 60mph is enough to batter hinges and rip the vent off!

I think it’s fine, so long as they open to the rear (so as not to scoop air as you travel) and you keep the screens open. You need to have them fixed (some allow this) to prevent turbulence sucking them open more. I have a rear vent open in summer to encourage a good air flow through the van.

Not long enough!
I've seen peeps driving with them wide open:eek: wether by design or error god only knows:confused:
I notice the small ones on my Hymer have one lockable position, but have no idea if that means they can or should be left open, sorry:confused:

Thanks for the replies, my Inca does have a small vent way above the cab seats, that can be locked open slightly, so maybe I'll try that one.

Les.

A long time now
I was coming down the M6 near Preston tonight when a rooflight came off a travellers caravan and flew through the air and bounced past me I'm glad to say, but I don't know what happened behind me

I do feel it's a bit risky, with high wind pressures, passing vehicle shock waves and so on, and the things are just made of thin plastic. i prefer just to clamp them down. You've got vehicle glass side windows which are much stronger. Still, it's yours to risk.

For fresh air when travelling, I just use the dashboard air vents with the fan on if necessary. For additional flow, you can also leave the cab windows slightly open or wide open if you don't mind the noise and any loose papers or maps flying out :)
