We have a frequent travellers ticket on the tunnel so we cross after 4pm and have a stop near Calais. Gravelines is our favourite. The official start of the Romantic Road is Wurzburg, but the logical start is Wertheim-am-Main as the northern part of the road follows the River Tauber. Wertheim is where the Tauber joins the Main. There is a stellplatz at Wertheim over looking the Main so you can watch the boats go by. Its under a viacuct but surprisingly isn't noisy.

The mid point between Garvelines and Wertheim would be Aachan or Cologne, both have a stellplatz. Aachan is easier to get to, and has a frequent bus service to the centre from the near by hospital. Cologne is nicer next the Rhein but make sure you approach from the north, its close to a U-bahn station or you can walk along the river to the centre.

With 4 months are you going to follow the Romantic Road with the Alpine Road, http://www.deutsche-alpenstrasse.de/en/home

And then the ultimate alpine road grossglockner?

https://www.grossglockner.at/gg/en/index

which conveniently leads you to trieste which is a good route into Croatia.

2 things you need to consider IMO

1, tolls getting from Germany to Croatia, your route can make a big difference to your pocket whether you re under or over 3500kgs on your v5

2, Romantic route is great but its a lot of lovely towns and castles and you can get a bit 'towned out'. I would suggest you look for some other activites that suits your interest and jump on and off it a bit.

Book train now - it gets more expensive the closer to the travel time.
Book an evening crossing after 1800 (cheapest) you will be in Calais for 2000 ish. Drive 5 minutes round to Cite Europe Aire for the night, stock up with groceries at the Carrefour. Head for Brugge Aire for the first trip. Head to Achen and Monschau for a visit then down to the Mosel travel to Bopard and catch the ferry across the Rhine, travel south down the Rhine
