DVLAup to their usual standards.

What month and year was your van registered.
Need day, month and year not just year.

Hi Roy
It does sound a bit daft, PLG £245 PHG £165, I increased the gross weight on my last MH and got a refund of the PLG tax paid. Pete (y)(y)

I know that I may sound naive but how do you increase rne weight of van to 4ton. ..? And how do you apply to have van registered as that, and what are the implications. Rgds Roy.

And they claim it's all to do with emissions .....lying bastids

Buy a land rover discovery same engine same emissions but the tax varies depending how many windows it has.

A 10 tonne truck pays less than my car

Hmm. Looks like I may well have the same battle then in September. Back in March I paid £123.75 for 6 months tax and mines a 2010 3.3t fiat.

Unless of course the tax rates changed drastically in April.

Looking at the tax rate table it would seem that I have paid the 6 month rate for a vehicle registered after 1st March 2001 (TC39) and not the euro 5 rate registered between 1st January 2009 and 31st December 2010 (TC36).

My vehicle was registered March 2010 - so would this automatically mean it is euro5 and is being taxed in the wrong class?

many many years! since I was a kid
dont forget that a great many vans are misregistered either by the dealer or dvla when new. the people employed to do the work at dvla are hardly rocket scientists and are working to a script. one wrong button press on the computer gets all sorts wrong

fixing it is a nightmare though as they never seem to accept responsibility and it is for the owner to prove that the vehicle complies with specific rules. once you are registered it is hard to change to a different tax class

Mike - that makes sense, though I originally assumed that the t11 category was for vehicles registered pre march 2001 only.

I don't know if these classes have changed recently but I was under the impression that my pickup was taxed as PLG.

I have recently taxed the pickup and changed address so I cannot check the past taxation class but it is indeed now classed LGV at £225.

I am baffled as to why there is a gap between the eligible dates for Euro IV and Euro V, effectively LGV's registered in 2007 and 2008, like mine, are taxed at the higher rate despite, presumably, being Euro IV compliant....puzzling!

Yes peter quite right your road tax is reduced, but my interest is in two years time I will be seventy and my van will need replating to 3850 if I'm to carry what we currently carry so yes my road Tax comes down but the extra costs of medicals, reduced speed restrictions in France etc are making me think twice hence I suspect thats why many people downsize ?

We have an 07 van and we just paid £230 tax for the year. 3.5t.
Why the difference in years. We should have paid the lower rate by the look of it.

Inspired by this post (and thanks for the contributions) I emailed DVLA regarding my tax rate (we have a 2010 registered Fiat Ducato) and this morning received this reply:
Dear Mr Humphreys

Thank you for your email received on 10/8/14. Your email reference number is xxxxxxx.

It may help if I explain that the Chancellor announced in his March 2000 Budget, the introduction of a new system of graduated Vehicle Tax.

All cars, registered from 1 March 2001 ('Y' registrations onwards), pay vehicle tax based on the carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) and the type of fuel used.

Vehicles that are registered before 1 March 2001, continue to be taxed according to their engine size only.

If we have not been supplied with the CO2emission figure by the manufacturer, the vehicle will also be taxed according to the engine size.

Unfortunately, this is the case with the vehicle you have mentioned.

If you feel that the manufacturer has made a mistake, and the CO2 emission figure on the V5C registration certificate is incorrect, then you should obtain evidence of this. The evidence would take the form of a letter (on headed notepaper) from the manufacturer, including the following information:

  • the registration number and chassis number of the vehicle
  • a statement that they had previously provided DVLA with incorrect CO2 emission figures for this vehicle
  • a clear statement of the correct CO2 emission figure for the vehicle

The evidence, a (signed) letter of explanation, and the V5C (with the error highlighted) should be sent to:

Vehicle Customer Services

DVLA

Swansea

SA99 1BA

So looking at my V5C I see that there is no figure for the CO2. Is my vehicle likely to be Euro 4? Is it worth pursuing? And how would I find out from Fiat the information as required by DVLA? Help would be appreciated.

Steve

Hello All

I have received my reply from DVLA too, which states that my vehicle is TC11. Basically I think that mikebeaches link and explanation in a previous post is the one that we need to refer to.

If your motorcaravan was registered from new as a motorcaravan (ie not a panel van that was later converted and then changed body type to motorcaravan) and is under 3500kg then it is a Private Light Goods vehicle, the emphasis being on the word private, and will be class TC11 and will either be £230 or £145 depending on engine size.

The other tax classes that we are managing to find are tc36 and tc39 and these are for light goods vehicles (ie typical unconverted van). Why the euro 4 and 5s in this category should have cheaper tax than the motorcaravan equivalent is beyond me.

I think that what really does not help us to understand this is that on the main tax band site
https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables
TC11 is mentioned right at the very top with all the car tax rates and directly below the heading 'cars and light vehicles registered before 1st March 2001', with no further mention of Private Light Goods vehicles registered after this date.
On mikebeaches link to form V149 no mention of dates is made in the PLG section.

I have responded to DVLAs reply to me querying whether TC11 (on the website link and not V149 form link) should actually read cars registered pre march 2001 and all PLGs. (or from looking at steves reply above it may be PLGs pre march 2001 and those newer that do not have a CO2 recorded)

The site that papajohn used (VCA) to determine tax cost/band, has no option to select Private Light Goods, which is why it is only bringing up TC36 and TC39 results under the light goods category.

Once I get another reply I'll update again but I suspect that TC11 applies to all PLG and not just those pre march 2001.
