I'm sure this wasn't tolled when we drove down a couple of years ago, yet last time we got stung by a couple of toll booths. Looked at the 2017 Michelin map in WH Smith's this evening and indicates it is a tolled road?

Anyone know any more detail?

Thanks

Yep, Michelin are right, from soon after the turn for Arcachon you have to pay, there was a way to save a little by bobbing off and back on at one junction, but now all charged

The alternative, unless you head off for the Somport Tunnel, is down the coast. It's a nice enough run but it takes quite a long time. On a cost/per basis it's cheaper to use the toll road.

I drive it regularly. Total of about €20 which gets you into Spain on motorway and saves bloody hours on crappy side roads.

Agree totally with this. I normally use non-toll from Calais to Bordeaux but there are two tolls between Bordeaux and just north of Biarritz followed by two or three more from Biarritz down to Arun. They total about 20euro [oh where is the euro button on my qwerty]. the 1st two require a fair old detour to avoid them and the A road section from Bayonne to Arun is a pain in the a**e, normally with very heavy traffic. I'm from the 'short arms and deep pockets brigade' but for me, this section is worth the tolls.

The first two toll sections south of Bordeaux are easily skirted with minimum mileage and time. The diversions are as follows:

To avoid tolls (southbound) :

Leave A63 at exit 18 "Le Muret".Turn south on D834 to Castelnau. Here turn right onto D410, then D10E which runs along the eastern side of the motorway. Rejoin motorway at Liposthey (exit 17).

At exit 12, follow D947 for 1 km towards Castets. Then left onto D378. When this starts running along the western side of the motorway, fork left onto D10E. Rejoin the motorway at Magesq (exit 11).

We did this route on the way down (April 6th ish) because it looked toll free on the map, then we saw the first peage sign and turned off, you can get passed by using tiny roads through a couple of villages and at one point your right along side the rich people on the toll road. There was one more section further down but the diversion round it looked very long so we paid the toll

If you come off at J18 and head down into Pissos there is a nice little stopover behind the church where motorhomes stay the night. Public toilet block around the corner with water tap outside and poss to empty loo. 44.30808 -0.77610 Then back up to Liposthey J17 back onto the AutoRoute.

Another possibility instead of doing the second dogleg at Castets is to carry on down from Pissos to Mont de Marsan on the D834 then head back along the D824 via Dax and rejoin the A63 at J9 but we haven't tried that yet.
As mentioned its not worth trying to avoid the J8 toll as the D810 at St Vincent de Tyrosse is a bit of a bottleneck at times.

Can't remember where I got this from but...
All Class 2 -
Saugnac et Muray J18 - J17 €5.30
Castets J12 - J9 €5.30
Benesse Maremme - J8 - € €5.30
La Negresse - J5 - J2 - €3.40
Briatou - J2 - J1 - €2.60
AP1 (Spain) first toll just after J7 - €2.15

Thanks for the information regarding the possible stopover in Pissos. I pass through there on my route to Somport tunnel. Very handy. (y)

Not only tolled but greatly improved. We drove up it in April. The old long 2 lane sections where trucks weren't allowed to overtake is now three lanes, and the road surface is brand new. Worth a few Euros of anyone's money.

We used the route Flamenca outlined above in April this year and saved 14.40 at Castets and 14.40 at Muret (over 3.5 tons, over 3m high) whilst using the autoroute service road which runs alongside and in sight of the motorway. I outlined the route in detail last year:-

Maybe took 30 minutes longer?

I take it that the old N10/D1010 is now the A63, that's a pain as we don't do tolls.:)

Martin
I always get charged at Class 3 but press the help button and say "mais je suis une camping-car". Too which they fall about laughing and lower it to Class 2. Result.
