Having owned my Rapido 972M for 5 years I gave in to "her in doors" and brought it across the channel to the UK in September. 3 days at the York show was a great success despite the mud. Sadly as we entered Fort William "white van man" going like a bat out of hell came around a bend and removed by offside (near side when at home in France) mirror. Needles to say he did not stop!

A few days later we stopped at that well known UK dealer's to see if they had a mirror, No they replied but we could order one £935 plus vat and fitting. No Thanks said I! On route home we went to the Rapido factory at Mayenne, new mirror 774 Euros (£520) well it is electrically operated, heated and includes the indicator. Fitting by the local dealer cost 24 Euros Yes that's only £17 including vat!

Either the UK wants a big profit or the delivery business is extremely profitable. At those prices it has got to be worth bringing you motorhome to France for repairs and servicing.

We get ripped off in everything. I think it's because we don't riot like the rest of Europe. It's the same with EC directives, we obey to the letter whilst the rest cherry pick and ignore what they don't like. Us Brits just accept everything.

Don't get me started on my soap box. One of my pet hates this. As stated above, we Brits just put up with it, we are like lambs to the slaughter. The main reason we are ripped off is because they know they can get away with it and we won't say a thing. We won't protest or riot. Just look what happens when there is a shortage of something, we Brits are queing down the road and buying up all we can get regadless of cost and sod the other person.

It is a pity, but very true.

My thoughts exactly.

£900 jesus, They might be good with electric this and that, but for that ammount of money I could buy 1800 deicer cans from tesco, and use me arm to signal a right turn if I was desperate for it to be seen.::bigsmile:

Rip of britain

Hi guys
In the UK we are NOT citizens, we are subjects. There is a huge gulf between the two statuses, and as such we are not protected by a bill if rights. Until this changes we are expected to doff our caps and be grateful for what we receive.
Its being so chearful that keeps me going.

Hi,

It always amazes me when this subject is raise about Rip Off Britain, Its only rip off Britain because we make it like it, who do you think is charging these high prices, its another British person, we all want as much for our houses, jobs etc etc we all take as much as we can get, and moan when its not us getting it ??

I find the subject that really annoys me is when the news readers or chat shows on the TV start on about Polish workers being prepared to work for less, I just hope we can get some Polish workers who will read the news and run the chat shows then we will see if those who are praising the situation actually think its still a great thing ??

I will get off my soap box now

Sorry
Brian

When i married Irina I was extremely proud of the UK and drummed it into her to get her to come here as she wasn't keen on leaving her family but found over the last 9 years being born and breed here means very little and doing things by the book means even less.

I have also learnt that my father who was seriously and permanently injured during WW2 fighting voluntarily for his country is to old to matter now he is an age when he should be able to expect something back even if it was only kind words.

All in all very shabby and totally agree with your sentiments Rory.

But more to the point is who has made it like it, It must have something to do with us surely.

Another example of rip off Britain. This months site reviews in MMM.

All prices based on Motorhome + 2 adults.

UK Caravan club £12.10 - £19.90 members only. CC own add. claims £7 per night saving for members so non member equivilent £19.10 - £26.90.

UK Camping & caravan club £18.25 - £20.15

UK private £16

Germany £11.90

Spain £9.00 - £10.98

Makes you think who are the clubs really there to help. Looks to me like the clubs are the biggest rip off of the lot.

Regards Geoff.

Hi,

I am not supporting the CC or the C&CC but some of your prices are very selective, i have just checked a few in Spain on my ACSI DVD and they the few that i checked have a range from £16.68 to £31.17[not euros] I know most of them give 50% disscounts for 30 days etc but there are a lot of people who only want to spend one or two nights and some of the UK sites can be a lot more expensive than you are stating,

That's not to say that I don't agree that we do have high charges for most things in the UK but that's as i have said before is because we want high wages high house prices values free banking [at the point of use] etc you can't have one without the other, we including me want all of the above but then keep complaining that everyone else is trying to rip us off ?

The prices I have shown were not selective at all, well not by me anyway, but are, as I stated, the 5 sites in the sites review section of the December 2007 issue of MMM.

Hi,

I keep trying to say that I totally agree that our prices are a lot higher than most other places and agree that it probably is Rip of Britain, that's not my point, the point i am trying to make is that its US that make it like it not some unknown person who we keep calling "Rip Off Britain" we are "Rip Off Britain".

Take for an example people go to Europe, Germany usually, and say that they have saved £10000 i.e. £10000 less than they would have had to pay for the equivalent right hand drive unit purchased in the UK and they then start the old thread look at these savings its "Rip OFF Britain".

But when they come to sell it they won't reduce their second hand value buy the £10000 plus the same amount of depreciation as has taken place with the UK sourced unit ??or will they ?? assuming they won't, like most sensible people they will try to get as much as they can, are they then becoming part of this Rip Off Britain they were complaining about ??

It may be Rip off Britain but WE made it like it ??? perhaps we should have a disscussion on how if it is possible we can change it.

Very true, the socialist calls it greed, the capitalist wealth generation and we all know who to blame for this ethos.

But I think it's too late for change, today's generation have no concept of doing a 'good turn' or something for nothing, money is king, wealth at any price, they know the cost of everything but the value of nothing.

Only a few days ago our son was baby sitting his sister, one of his friends enquired to his whereabouts, when told he responded by asking.. "how much are you paying him" I rest my case..

Can't see how for example Microsoft is charging much more for Vista in UK than anywhere else is our own fault apart from the fact we don't rebel.

i totally agree we have allowed things to happen and my $ = £ was just an observation.

This country has gone to the dogs by allowing PC nonsense, tolerance to others at the expense of our own views, and towing the line to anyone who tell us to.

Us Brits have opinions and fairly strong ones but save them to gathering around the camp fire hoping no one thinks bad of them.

Too expensive

Two examples of British 'nonsense'. In the 1990's Mo and I were running St Agnes Beacon Caravan Club Site, which did not have a toilet block SO we thought we would do our members a favour by selling them Aquakem chemicals at just above cost price. The chemicals were ordered from a local store and delivered to our doorstep so all we had to do was put them on the shelf in the office. Can't remember how much we charged for the stuff but it was £'s cheaper than the local caravan store - it was perfectly good Aquaken Blue, properly sealed bottles and everything - and we didn't sell a bottle - people thought there must be something wrong with it because it was too cheap! We heard members say we must have watered it down because it just couldn't be sold as cheap as that!!!!!! We took it off the shelves and a couple of days later added a couple of £'s to the price, making it about 50p less than the local store, put it back on the shelves and sold gallons and gallons of it - making us a nice little nest egg!

We went to Greece on holiday and whilst waiting to get on a local bus we heard a couple (male and wife) chatting in English just behind us - we didn't want to listen in to their conversation but it was difficult not to - as they were complaining about having to barter in the local market's - bit beneath their dignity! When the bus arrived there was the usual rugby scrum to get on board - no standing idly by here whilst an orderly queue got on board - the usual custom was elbows, knees and brawn got you on the bus and with a bit of luck, your missus got on as well!!! When the bus was full, the doors shut and we pulled away - leaving a very irate British Couple standing on the pavement, bemoaning the fact that they were the first in the queue and everybody else had jumped the queue - as if anybody else was listening!

We are our own worst enemies!!!!!!
