Just a little bit of info and a lot of photos on the above museum.

To be honest it ain't exactly a museum it's more a scrapyard but interesting enough all the same. It's 7 euro to get in which is a bit cheeky but I've wanted to have a look round for a while now so I stumped up the cash and went in.

Most aircraft have a little plaque beside them giving their spec. Weight, speed, armaments etc but that's all the information you get. It would have been nice to know a lot more about where the machines saw action and when.

Right beside the airport and you can easy get parked at any of the airports official car parks and walk along to the gate where you need to ring a bell for someone to let you in. Parking isn't too expensive and it's never that busy.

Anyway here are the pics...

But this thing was the star attraction: An Mi-6 Heavy transport helicopter. Even with the guys jeep in the pictures you still wont get a sense of how huge this thing was! 136 feet long including rotors 30 feet high. This thing is an absolute monster...

And that's pretty much it. If you are in to this kind of thing it is well worth a look. There is so much other stuff the guy has lying about. Old mines, engines, fire trucks, airport vehicles, enriched weapons grade plutonium. Just loads of stuff lying around for the curious.

Sounds/looks like a fascinating place.

Tried to find some videos of the Mi-6 but there doesn't seem to be much out there.

This is the best I could find for anyone that's interested.

For anyone that's interested... This is a video of a tourist flight in a mi-26. Not exactly the same model as the one I pictured above but similar and well worth the watch.

I think There's a Mil at Speyer? Huge thing, you can go inside it.

I wanted to go inside that one at Riga but the guy just collects your money, lets you in then buggers off so there was nobody to ask permission. Didn't want to go creeping about the worlds biggest helicopter without permission ?

OK, OK, OK, so you're impressed by the worlds largest helicopter however I'm more interested in this one.

Did you happen to take a photo of the plaque next to it?
Is it a Mk1 or Mk2 wheelbarrow?;):giggle:

Haha I never noticed it in that photo before. I'm going with Mk1 but somebody with greater wheelbarrow knowledge than me will be along to confirm shortly :giggle:

I cant help with the wheelbarrow but the kamov 26? Thats also in the picture is a fairly unusual machine as it has co axial rotors and no tail rotor

Just to demonstrate the lifting/carrying capability of the Mi26 - here.

Very impressive. The guy in one of the other videos said the US regularly chartered them to lift their chinooks in Afghanistan. A proper work horse of a machine.
