No, I can't open this page either. I'm not too sure about that company anyway, although that view is probably unfair. It's just that they don't want much to do with Hymers and offered me a really bad trade in price last year.

That's interesting to read, as I'd generally heard good things about their reputation and I think that's the first negative I've come across. My MH purchasing has been on hold for six months, so I'm just starting to limber up again and was trying to discover if they do "try before you buy" rental. I'd have nothing to trade in, so I guess I'd be relatively popular ...

Ah, that's a bit discouraging, though I guess stock levels will vary... Hmm. I've only been there once on our first look at motorhomes last summer - we hadn't a clue what we wanted, what to look for, in what price bracket or anything really, so I though perhaps we should start there again now we have a bit more of the plan. The website being down has rather put paid to doing that the lazy way - I guess I might actually have to get off my bottom and drive over there

You know, thats's really given me a much needed nudge. Dick Lane is probably the closest MH seller to us - it's only about 15 mins drive - but I keep being put off because the area always feels so dodgy and their pitch looks small so I thought it wasn't really worth a look. I might take the Junior Miss over there on a flying visit one day this week and stop being so shallow!

I was gonna mention Dick Lane because we went there as well, friendly, helpful not pushy and I was more interested in the boat they had sat on their land.

I cant view it either.
Same here Dale, When we went November 09 we were surprised at the musty smelly , dated interiors , and old well used models they had for sale.
We had a £30k budget and wouldn't have touched any of the used models we saw. Opening the door was enough to make us not even want to look inside.
( something you don't get on the Internet , smelly vision remember too )
We soon left , it made us even more sure on the one we eventually bought.:winky:
We bought ours from Danum Leisure in Askham near Doncaster BTW

Thanks all - it's loading fine for me now too  guess it was just a weekend thing - which is a little annoying as I'm now sitting in an open plan office with a very large computer screen so I can't actually make any use of it!

Ok, so this week is now going to include a trip to Dick Lane and a trip to Danum Leisure - good job I only work part time ::bigsmile: Any more suggestions, whilst I'm on a roll?

My MH purchasing has been on hold for six months, so I'm just starting to limber up again and was trying to discover if they do "try before you buy" rental. I'd have nothing to trade in, so I guess I'd be relatively popular ...

We bought our motorhome from them last September, have to say they are excellent at saying on behalf of richard baldwins we are sorry apart from that we won`t be going back there.

They had 7 weeks to get our M/H ready for us to pick up, they hadn`t done any of the jobs they said they would, fitted the wrong bike rack (not even fitted straight) so we had to come home without it, not impressed as it was a 4 hr round trip, our daughter lives in Halifax so had driven to Chester to take us back to pick it up, so she had to take us back home and then drive back to halifax all for nothing.
First time we used it we found a gas leak plus lots of other faults.
It`s been back 3 times and the gas leak is still there, being sorted somewhere else now.

It took them 3 attempts to get our name correct on the log book, basically just a list of errors, we found out it hadn`t even been through their workshop for a pre-delivery check.
I insisted they take the bike rack off which was 10mm out of square and covered the rear window, which annoyed me as we would now have 4 holes in the back of the van. They did in the end fit a motorbike rack though this was done by an outside company, considering we paid the price on the window it was the least they could do for their abysmal service.

Our advice would be look elsewhere.

Have a look at http://www.johnscross.co.uk//

Their website is excellent, lots of photos of the M/H`s and they have been very courteous and helpfull with some of our problems.

RobnChris - that's not good to hear  I hope you are still getting pleasure from your MH despite the bad start?

Some of the dealer stories on this site and others are just awful - I do worry that as, an inexperienced newbie, my chances of getting ripped off do feel quite high, though I try to tell myself that people are more likely to report bad experiences than good....

John's cross do have a good "feel" to them, esp because they put themselves well into the public eye without seeming to attract flack ... If only they weren't so darned far away!

Hi,
We love our motorhome but won`t tell a lie the way things went with Baldwins did take a bit of the shine off but we are British and can rise above that :thumb:

We are determined to make it our motorhome and comfortable for us, we are lucky in that the previous owners really looked after it so it`s in excellent condition, we have added our own touches, the latest being Air Suspension which has transformed the ride.
Take your time and look at every motorhome you can, perhaps turn up at one of the rallies, we are certain that other Funsters will be only too pleased to show you their motorhomes and how they live with them.
If you are like us we knew this was the one for us as soon as we looked inside.

Whichever model you choose we wish you well.

Rob and Chris.

Thanks for the thought, dont let distance put you off, we have supplied MH's all over the country, Ireland, Scotland and even one to India.

Websites can be contrary sometimes, even ours the last few days as we were moving it from one domain to another, seems to have sttled down now.

I'd never heard of Dick Lane Motorhomes mentioned earlier, so I googled them and their website seems to be dated 2003. Are they just behind in their technology or no longer in business?

We bought a new Romahome from them, very good service and an excellent trade in price.

Van ready on specified day, had a problem with DVLA (not Baldwins fault) but they sorted it and stood the cost - good customer relations they said.

We have had no problems with our van. The PDI must have been done correctly

They're very definitely still open, but they really do qualify as late adopters of technology! Wonder if I can volunteer OH's techie services in exchange for a healthy discount :winky:

THat's more in line with what I'd heard about them in the past. When did you buy from them, if you don't mind me asking? I had a quick look through your posts but can't see whether your experience with them is recent or not....

Yes, I think there's some vans on there that have been there since we were last looking, though I'm not sure how fast the turnover is on MHs? There's a CI riviera there that would fit our bill ... hmmm...

Richard Baldwin Motorhomes website and aftersales

Their website is slow because of large image sizes.

We picked up new motorhome (4th so far) from Richard Baldwins. Paul was fabulous as always.

When we picked up the motorhome, there were no spare keys but we were assured these would be available soon.

When tried Air con (transferred from our previous vehicle as part of the deal) on 12v it only powered fan and not compressor. Habitation door catching frame and difficult to close.

Returned motorhome after only 1 week (5th july) to have both niggles sorted as we thought. After several weeks of phonecalls and waiting, still no sign of spare keys or Air con repair.

Spoke to MD after being given run around from service who assured he would try to rectify situation.

MD returned call and said Air con (which was transferred from our previous vehicle) needed a switch which would have to be ordered from Dometic and they wouldn't know when it would be available till tomorrow (nearly 4 weeks after receiving the vehicle). In the past three weeks we have been told that the AC was sorted, only to arrive to collect and find it still not working, we have been told that it needed an inverter, the unit needs recharging with refrigerant gas and even that the unit now works on neither mains or 12 volts.

Spare keys still not available so we contacted previous owner ourselves who said keys are available to collect - MD said he would only offer to have them posted, no thought given to the problems if they go missing in the post. I am now having to travel 80 miles tomorrow to collect my own keys because Richard Baldwins after a month haven't organised this.

To add further insult the paperwork for the new motorhome didn't arrive which was odd. We eventually found out that it had gone to a different address and had been returned by the homeowner. Considering we have been customers for years I am disappointed that Baldwins didn't even manage to get our contact details correct.

Until we decided to swap our motorhome I would have said that Baldwins was second to none, but now I feel they are on a par with our previous dealer in Huddersfield who also treated us badly after spending nearly £50,000 on a new bessacarr just over 4 years ago. I have sourced an alternative dealer for Autotrail and will be taking our new motorhome there for its future services unless Baldwins get their act together.

From our experience I would say your chances are about 50 : 50. We have had 4 motorhomes now and only 2 were pleasant experiences, in each case the second model we purchased from the dealer was the let down, i.e. we bought 2 from Lowdhams with the second being a poor experience and now 2 from Baldwins.
