Getting the hang of it from 2017
Has anyone been to the RIAT air show and stayed in their motorhome at a local site.
Thinking of going and hoping some of you fun persons would have some tips.

Thought about staying Friday and Saturday leaving Sunday

Thanks

We used to go regularly and stayed on the C&CC rally. Get there Thursday and you see the aircraft arriving as they fly directly over the rally field. look up gloucester DA as they run the rally
the farm on the hill overlooking the airfield is booked a year ahead so little chance of getting on there

We’ve booked for the CAMC rally field.
I have investigated the campsite run by RIAT but it is very pricey at £40 per person per night . Apparently best view from there though. Show entry prices of £50 + per person per day on top of that. I also read some reviews saying that can be noisy late at night with parties and music and close pitching, so opted for the hopefully good marshalling of the CAMC volunteers!

the C&CC rally is about 60 vans and very civilised abiding by club rules and no noise after 11

Or park at the Racecourse and get the bus from there.
nowhere near as much fun as sat in a comfortable chair with a beer or 3 watching the aircraft coming over so low that the pilots and crew are waving back

It’s under centre rallies, I’ll find the link

I think the links currently broken as should be from this page but it’s got the wrong date and wrong details when I try it
http://www.gloucestershirecentre.co.uk/rallyprog.htm
Your link is OK @Riverbankannie and goes to the correct place.
Absolutely no noisy parties on a C&MC rally field, whatever next???:LOL:
@NPlusM, you might still be lucky and find a space if you are a C&MC member but it does get booked up early.
We have been going for the last few years and it's great sitting in comfort outside the van with the commentary on the radio.
This year, like last, we will be in the 'overflow' field across the road from the main rally field. Advantage is, it is right by the airfield fence so you can see a bit more of the ground action.
Just hoping for perfect weather like last year.
Hope to see some Funsters there, we have stickers front side and rear of the van so no excuse for not coming to say hello. (y):D

Richard.

If you try:
http://www.airshowcamping.co.uk

or https://www.fairfordairshowcamping.net/

we have been to both of these sites with our RV.
The Fairford site is essentially a farmers field but is under the return flightpath as the aircraft approach the airfield either on landing or its display line. They do have some decent loos & decent showers to. They hold a barbque in their barn which is on site. If you go in to the event you have a bout a 20 25 minute walk to the entrance gate.

Kempsford is right on the perimeter of the airfield & more or less mid way on the runway, great left to right view but you would not see low level things because of the control tower. They have a bar, with guest groups, Pizza bar, fish & chip bar, cooked breakfast bar. Small shop & again decent loos & showers.
They do have some electric hookups but they can be pricey for a short visit - its £45 this year for 7 days or 1 day.
We are at Kempsford again this year.

If you need to know more drop me a PM & I'll send you my phone number

Regards

Arthur.

True, but I know a place that’s is right under the flight path and they use the farm house as there reference point :)

From here you can smell the pilots breath :D

Looking at the booking form for Kempsford, airshowcamping, it says £15 per person per night plus one £20 pitch fee, so 7 nights would be £230
EHU extre £45

Yes I saw that, being as I am still working for a few more years, time is in short supply so I was looking to arrive first thing Friday morning and leave on Sunday.
I am trying to sort something out at the moment.

I'd have preferred their field being a little closer to the 'action' but wasn't a member... so booked with C&CC at their THS [£17/nt]... was contemplating seeing I could swap, but I guess not.

My only dilemma now, being a first time visitor, is whether to get a ticket for the show itself...
  • I realise I will be able to see most of the action from beside my MH pitch.
  • But I'd quite like to have a wander around the static displays & soak up the 'atmosphere' as well as see some of the runway action.
  • However, don't want to leave Kerry alone too long & I'm not overly keen on crushing crowds. [She is usually completely un-fazed by loud noise & totally chilled in the van, but obviously something to play by ear <geddit>]
  • Wondering how practical it is to have 'passouts' to return to the MH for a breather & to get back in - how long a walk to the gate.
  • Was thinking a Friday ticket - shorter air display - but presumably slightly small crowds...
  • But then it's £50+ a ticket, and what if there's bad weather.

Decisions decisions - what do the regulars think?

We and our friends are going for Tues to Monday. On the C&MC site. Both couples very much dog lovers but don’t have our own at present. Are we able to help out looking after while you visit the show? Is she happy with strangers?

I can’t help with your questions though as it’s the first time for us and also undecided about buying show tickets.:)

We are going Thursday to Monday the main event is Friday to Sunday, You may wish to go for longer if you are particularly interested in the arrival & departure of the various aircraft but the shorter visit is enough £140 plus electric if you want it. The location is such that you do not need to pay the £50 a head entrance to the event as the air display happens right in front of you And RIAT radio gives all the info about who & what is up in the air.

We have now been a few times as a family get together, initially we bought the weekend tickets then just the Saturday ticket this was when we stayed at Townsend Farm (Fairford Airshow camping) & the last couple of years no ticket as Kempsford is almost in the event.
However Kempsford is about 3-5 mins from a gate if you did want to go in.
Re pooches, we had our Yorkie at the events - sadly went to Yorkie heaven last May - but she didn't, seem concerned even with the Eurofighter exercising above us at either of the campsites.

Townsend farm did always seem to have room whereas Kempsford is difficult to get in to, but once you have been there the next year they will give you first refusal.

With fast jets screaming right overhead it can get VERY noisy. As dogs have more sensitive hearing than us you should think carefully about leaving one in the van on its own. Also your neighbours might not be too happy.
It is a fair walk to the gates from the C&MC and C&CC fields. You wouldn't want to spend a large part of the day walking to and fro.
Fairford is a big airfield and to see most of the statics you will be doing a lot of walking just around the show site.
Although you won't see as much I would be inclined to just chill in the sun (hopefully).

Richard.

Went on the CMC website last night (gloucester Region) saw booking form, then read the show only had 9 places left, so the advice was to ring them before filling in booking form & sending money, fair enough I thought.
I rang the organisers today and was informed that the site was fully booked, but there was a reserve list. I then contacted Caroline CMC, and having spoken to her, we have now been placed on reserve list.
They have 250 places booked, but are expecting the usual drop outs, some even on the arrival day itself.
So fingers crossed, we might get there.
PS: Thanks to the likes of @Clarky,;) the first place to fill up was the overspill area, so the words out, that is the place to be! although it was mentioned by Caroline CMC Bookings lady..."oh! it is rather noisy over there", to which I said EH?, you what?,Half past 3!, That's fine with me:)

That's really kind of you - she certainly is pretty happy with anyone that pays her attention... a legacy I presume of being 'handled' at the kennels and racing tracks. So thank you.
I'll play it by ear - but I think she'd be happy enough for a couple of hours or so chilling in the van, perhaps it would be an issue if I wanted to be out all day.
