Has anyone fitted one of the cheaper reversing cameras advertised on ebay, ( £20 - £40 range)? Are they any good? Any particular recommendations?

Yes, several. The cheapest are not the best quality. Unfortunately, it's difficult to recommend since there are so many suppliers. One note to self is to connect the cameras to the reversing light. If they're normally powered (meaning powered on all the time when driving) my experience is the camera "burns out". My tip is to test one out. If it doesn't work, go for a test winning brand :) My cameras have worked fine, but image quality is below the best.

On our 2005 Lunar Champ we have quite a usable rear view mirror when driving but not so good for reversing. There seems to be an awfully great big price jump from the ebay cheapies up to the proper jobs.
Has anyone else had experience of these cheap ones?

We've used the cheapies for years ... not had an issue at all with the cameras or monitors that go over the existing mirror and we use them all the time when driving as we can't see through the camper.

The cameras are so cheap you can easily keep a spare with you just to be safe which we do, although we've never needed to use it!

On our Familyscout it was mounted under the rear bumper - originally it was just a temporary job as we were short on time due to going on holiday so it just got put there, but it was so good in that position that it was then permanently fitted there.

I manged to get an expensive one discounted to £40 was on sale elsewhere for £180. Unfortunately it's not much better than the cheap ones, after all they're all unbranded and made in China.
The screen overheats and goes off, I think it's down to a cheap choke component inside that is under rated.

Now if Sony, Apple or Panasonic made them they would probably be worth the money.

Pot luck with cheap ones, I have a couple of cheap ones for my service camera and front camera but for rear view & reversing I have a twin one from Parking Cameras UK. The one one from Parking Cameras has a stainless steel bracket, with the cheap metal bracket ones you will end up with rust streaks down the back of the van. Also the cheap plastic ones the lens angle is often too wide to be of much use for reversing.

Has anyone tried a wireless type. I have a dual camera fitted but one camera has packed up. I suspect I'll need to dismantle the rear wall to get to the existing connections.

I’ve got a ebay wireless one in the back of the toad to use a a driving “mirror” with the receiver in the van .

Ive got an ebay wired one on the rear numberplate which I use as a driving “mirror”

I’ve got an expensive one looking down for reversing.

I can switch between the first two on an ebay “mirror mounted monitor “ with remote control

The original expensive one shows on the radio headset when reversing

The quality of the picture on the expensive one is a bit better but the others are adequate for the job. The wireless one occasionally gets interference from passing cars - assume poor suppression on the passing cars.

Being a German van just pop the cover at the back of the centre rear cupboard and I expect you will find the cables and the camera will just plug in.

Do you think? That would be handy.
I assumed they would have fitted the camera cables through the back wall and pulled them (and the joints) tight down inside the back of the paneling.
I'll have look later

Normally with Hymer group van, if factory fitted, the cables with sockets on the end are near where the camera cable comes through the rear wall.

If you want a cheap camera setup, I’ve got a fully functioning Waeco camera, monitor, and massive roll of cable for it that I’ve just removed, as wanted twin camera setup.

Not that easy but pretty simple. They are behind the head board
Now all I need is a replacement camera. It looks like one of these but I have a pair.

Problem with the cheap eBay ones is the brackets are steel and you will soon have rust marks down the back of the van, better to pay a bit more for one with a stainless steel bracket.

Or wait for this one and meanwhile make a stainless bracket?
... or use the existing bracket but take it off and paint it so it's got a good protective 'coat' on it to prevent it rusting .... (y)

Going to post a chinese system in the classified sales this weekend.
Tested but not got round to fitting.
Got a new head unit that takes camera input so used that instead.

Spent today fixing my cameras.
I found these on ebay that have the same simple connections. So cheap I bought two.
Fixed them to a stainless steel bracket. Wired them into my existing wiring and VDU and it all works a treat.
