I have done a search and am still not sure which product to use?!!

2003 Hymer with a leaking roof light around the seal - I have read of W4 tape as being good and reasonably easy to apply or maybe Puraflex 40.

What is the current favourite to do tis job?

I used Hodgson CV non setting sealant earlier this year. Its been fine so far. I think the original sealant was as old as the Hymer, so 16 years.

I used w4 tape with also some sikaflex round the edge. Been perfect for a couple of years its essential to get all the old mastic off though when doing the job and also use a cleaning product before your mastic ect

Thanks very much for your replies. It seems some people favour a sealant used in a cartridge gun and others use the tape. I'll have a read and give it a go!

As Bobby dazzler said,, clean all the old mastic off. I used both "white spirit" and Methylated spirits to clean off the old sealant, mostly after scraping with flat object, then wipe down surround before refitting. The White spirit seems to dissolve the sealant so wiping off excess in not a problem. the Meths degreased to leave a clean area before putting on new sealant.

I found a flat plastic scraper worked well so not to damage the roof when scraping the old mastic off

If you were the Technical Manager how come you did not sort the product out? 😉

That was over 25 years ago I dealt mostly with the electrical products (I'm an electronics bod) I knew sod all about sealants then and buy price was the overriding factor.

I think the secret of resealing a rooflight is to not be sparing of the amount of sealant. Lets face it ,, no one will see how much is being squeezed out all over your roof,, it is cheap enough and you only want to do it once. :giggle: :giggle:
Totally agree

Use a good bed of Puraflex 40
W4 tape will ooze out in hot weather then when frost comes along ice will move it allows water in.
It is only used in factory because it's clean and cheap. The fact that it's crap and workers in the factory don't really care once it's left does not matter 😉

I used W4 on my Hymer rooflights about 6 years ago. Not a drop of water since.

I used Puraflex on my roof lights etc, 10 years ago 😉plus fitted dozens without leaks. The only leaks I ever had was when I used tape after been given samples to try and after the first winter a couple returned with leaks so I went back to what I know works 👍

Sounds good but if you had to remove the roof light would it be really difficult with the puraflex?

No it's quite easy to cut through with a Sharpe scraper and easier still with a buzz saw ( multi saw) again with a old blade sharpened
