MH newbie but we owned a caravan previously.
Got a 2009 Peugeot Boxer based motorhome. I want to replace the original single DIN radio with another but with bluetooth for hands free calling. There's a fair few radios to choose from but the installation wiring is confusing me with regard to steering wheel controls. Some posts on different forums say they needed to buy adapter kits to continue using the controls and some say they didn't bother but the controls still worked. Our factory fit radio switches on without the ignition on and switches off after twenty minutes. Would it do this if it was connected via the canbus? Also if I connect my OBD reader it cannot currently detect a sound system.

Any useful comments about determining what I need to look at or buy (if anything) in addition to the radio would be much appreciated. TIA.

We changed from factory fit models to a Pioneer Unit.

It needed a ’Patch’ wiring kit for our steering wheel controls to work. The kit you buy will depend on what media head unit you decide to buy. Can’t help with going from single DIN to double or the OBD reader.

We already had a switch, but the fitters replaced the original rocker switch for a new one. With this switch on you can use the media unit without the ignition on. Switch it off to prevent battery drain.👍

I changed the radio in my 2012 Boxer from a single to double din which will give you more choice, it means cutting a bit of plastic out and buying a new surround which matches the factory fitted ones profile.

We replaced the factory Fiat one with a double din one. Things to consider with a replacement is whether you want a CD player (if like us you have loads) or if you want DAB. Not sure about the aerial situation with DAB but I am not convinced by the coverage especially on the Continent. Tuned into our local radio at home on DAB in my car I can drive for a while with no radio. I wanted one with LW to get radio 4 LW to listen to cricket which the Kenwood I got did have. If you have a smartphone or a MP3 player it would be best to have Bluetooth connectivity to play m7sic when travelling in the Continent. French radio is dire.

Basically horses for courses.

Looks a bit OTT for making hands free calls but very nice all the same!

Looks good, what model is it?
Pioneer AVIC-1000DAB. It’s Motorhome specific, and an option on the new Ducato 8.

If you want to have it fitted in earlier vans, then you need to purchase an extra bit of surround to make it blend in the the dashboard neatly. Also be aware, if you like to use the pop up document/ tablet holder, this will no longer be possible. (y)
