I getting a bit neurotic about losing my keys but do you really need to pay £130 for a spare remote key?

OUR QUOTATION PRICE:
£130.00 for a spare remote key -

£80.00 for a gain entry if the key you have is locked inside.

I would love to hear about any alternatives

Key is not expensive it is the engine immobiliser bit within key

Fiat. Seicento 2003 model ,dealer wanted £280 car was not worth that

We have been quoted £280, from fiat dealership, for new key remote and programming.
We found that lots of locksmiths won't supply new keys for the fiat Ducato
We need to replace ours as completely ruined after they went for a swim in the Mediterranean, lesson learened.
Waterproof key case on the Christmas list.

They've got us where it hurts. But Honda, as in bike, £12 for a good quality chipped key off ebay, £8 for local locksmith to cut it and a free video off YouTube on how to program the ECU.

As you say Brian they are buggers if they can get away with it. It seems like I'll have to bite the bullet - but look the other electronics I could buy for that same £130 ...................

For us it's not the key that's the problem it's the remote, the salt water has corroded the electronics. We have had it apart drying for a few weeks, and used contact cleaner, but it won't work
The key will open the van, and will start the engine, but will not disable the alarm
The price quoted is for the remote.
Also as we were in Spain and had to send for the spare remote from home.
Luckily we were on campsite so had an address for it to be posted to.
Sorry a little of thread, but we will carry the spare with us in future.

You might of been able to remove alarm fuse or disconnect alarm which would of got you out of trouble if push came to shove

But at least you was able to sort it one way or another

Cheap keys are usually clones of your existing key, e.g. they copy it exactly including the immobiliser transponder code. The more expensive key will have a new transponder with a different code, which is programmed into the vehicle. If you have two keys and one is a clone of the other, they are both the same key as far as the vehicle is concerned, so if a fault develops causing one to lose communication with the vehicle, depending on the reason you may find that neither will work. If you lose one, you can't delete it from the vehicle to stop someone else using it without disabling your other key as well. Two separately programmed keys avoids any possible problems.

For that to happen the fault would need to be the ECU rather than the transponder. Anyway, in this case at least, the key transponder is fine - it's only the remote that has failed.

I was responding to the posts suggesting Timpsons or "cheap as chips" services. Just thought people should know what they might be getting. @Stealaway hasn't said that the remote has failed, just that he's feeling a little concerned about losing his key. The original remote key also contains an immobiliser transponder. Although the remote operation is separate from the immobiliser function, it's programmed to the vehicle through the same key coding operation on Ducatos. If the remote appears to have failed, first step is to get it reprogrammed to the vehicle - often resolves the problem.

"cheap as chips" services.
My cheap as chip ones came from the dealer at 8,50€ each for blanks with chips, 7,50€ to cut both & 19€ ( half an hours labour including vat) to reprogramme both + the original one.
The ford dealer charged me 42€ for 2 for the same on another vehicle. Although they came without needing to be cut.

For a spare Yale house key Timpsons would have charged me several times as much as the Polish bloke who has a key cutting and shoe repair shop in the High St.

I think he also does vehicle keys.

For any key like that or any vehicle key without chip the average supply & cut price here is 1€. I've never paid more.

I used to get key blanks and chips for nothing if I needed them for work. Nothing wrong with cheap as chips (no pun intended) as long as you trust the supplier. I'm not saying they're all like it, because of course they're not; but as some people have found out to their cost, a cheap "locksmith" who you don't know from Adam can work out to be very expensive when the extra key he cut or the profile he stored in his cutting machine was used to burgle your house several weeks or months later. Same goes for handing over your car keys to a pop-up car wash or the valeters who approach you in the supermarket car park. Are you sure that they're not running your keys through a cloning device and putting a magnetic tracker under your car whilst you're doing your shopping?

How many ignition keys do Fiat supply when new ? I don't have remote locking although the ignition key has that facility.

My secondhand 2010 based Fiat Ducato only came with one ignition key + 2 door keys which manually operate both the hab, drivers door and lockers (A-class type van).

I guess from the OP's question, it's normal to be only supplied with ONE ignition key ?

Just thinking.......if my van got nicked, the insurance company would probably expect me to produce 2 ignition keys !!!

We have had to buy some spare remote keys as the supplied non remote spare only unlocks the front cab doors which is not much use with the internal Heosafe locks on so we have to go in via the sliding door that it doesn’t unlock! Hickleys in Taunton https://www.hickleys.com/ supplied the spare keys, cutting them & programming them - you do need to have the motorhome there too as well as proof of ownership. From Citroen it would have been £300 for one remote key but had two from Hickleys for £202 (they do most makes) - not cheap but a bargain in comparison.
Might be handy for someone in or passing through Somerset & not far from VanBitz (y)

Sorry - you're right. I picked up on another post.

Ducato should come from the factory with one remote key and one non-remote. You can order a second remote key instead of the non-remote as a factory option, and the cost is very reasonable in comparison to a subsequent dealer order - around £50 I think. Panel van door unlocking is intentionally split for security. The three button remotes operate the cab doors on one button, rear and side doors on another - stops a thief entering the cab whilst the driver is in the back, or vice-versa. Key operation in the locks is similarly split, hence key slots on driver's and rear doors.

The only thing I don't like is that the factory deadlocks (if fitted) can only be set through the remote. Most other vehicles can also enable deadlocking with the physical key by using a specific procedure in the lock.

This is the key in question. It s now almost 7 years old and well used.
How long do they last? How long do the batteries last? Are they easy to change.
The Ebay company said a £100 but they would have to have the van at their premises but they are in Newcastle. I'm sure I can make trip up there some time this year. So that's the plan.
