Renting versus buying a campervan

I've only found vans made by Pilote, Carabus, Knaus and La Strada that have the 2m internal height
Globecar/Possl also do the higher ones.
I should confess that I have been attracted by the Compactline 138 but I really don't think I can justify all that space for one person!
We went from a Globecar PVC to a Compactline 138 ... Very little extra size externally but a heck of a load more space and comfort internally, but obviously at a cost.

With the constraints you are working with I think I would continue to rent.
I would suggest that needing probably a couple of hours from leaving home to hitting the road in your own mh will soon reduce the enjoyment factor. Then the same hassle putting it away again.

Thanks for the steer! I can't find UK Globecar versions at that height, but the Possl Roadcruiser XL definitely does.

I'd love to rent out an A class of that size just to see how it handles and feels (and whether it's too extravagant for just little ol' me!), but I can't find anywhere to test it out in the UK. Maybe I just need to keep an eye out for second-hand ones for sale and take them for a test drive.

Thanks. I think I could get to Abbey Wood in 45 mins which is not too bad, but I take the point about not having it on the drive!

That's a lovely idea and I'll definitely bear that in mind. Though I don't enjoy driving that much so I'm not sure how long I'd want to spend on the open US roads!
Plan your route carefully and you don't have to. However, stick to the Rockies, stay off the interstates and you will find empty roads with plenty of time to look at the awe inspiring scenery as you drive. All US motorhomes are automatics so driving is really easy.

We spend quite some time over the winter before planning routes and finding interesting stops along the way.

We store our motorhome at Gatwick Caravan Club site and it’s £700 per annum. We make use of the site for washing and hoovering van out etc. Can empty both wastes and use the loo if required. Good security. It works out better than I thought as it takes us nearer the tunnel than home would for trips abroad. We can drive to Brighton or Hove to give the van a run when we are not using it so much. We cannot store it on our narrow street so it’s either this or no van.

Another thing to consider regarding depreciation when buying new is the current price escalation and delivery timescales which can, if the order is price protected or honoured, negate any depreciation for a good few years. If you have a look at the ‘delivery delay’ threads running on the forum you’ll see there are some now benefitting by around 29%/£20k from current pricing having previously ordered a new vehicle.

Thanks - another excellent suggestion.

Yes very good point. Does anyone have any sense of when the current inflation might calm down?

Just looking at the automotive industry in general, and from the experiences of those I know trying to order new cars at the moment, I can’t see any improvement on the immediate horizon. Throw in the fact that the MoHo sector is a niche market, (r/h drive even more so), and I think that it just compounds the problem.

We are are good at it now but a five week tour of France/Germany would usually cost us less than £1.6k including fuel, ferries --- and food!

oops! We spent £4760 on our 2 month trip to Germany and Italy, That's Ferries, Fuel, 2 weeks of campsites/aires, Food, Restaurants, touristy stuff like a cable car up Etna etc

Although it was an eight weeks tour you obviously insist on posh touring :drinks:
Coming from Yorkshire we tend to be happy in steerage :Grin:

We live just outside London in Hertfordshire and our storage costs are £795 a year on a CAMC site. We are slightly longer at 7.5m I’m sure being shorter will be cheaper to store. Like many others we don’t worry too much about the costs, we just enjoy using our MH as much as possible. We both work full time and we try and use it a couple of times a month in the winter and more in the summer time.
