Thank you all for considered opinions; very helpful.

If you want to try one of "free" solutions which come with bank accounts etc check the fine print carefully. You may find there are limitations on how long you can be out of the country per year and the maximum length of each trip.

I've seen recommendations on here for other travel policies which seemed very cheap - only to discover they were of no use to me as they were too limiting. The companies don't advertise these restrictions very obviously and you really need to drill down into the T&Cs.
