I have just been told by my current travel insurance provider that if we are abroad using our annual travel insurance when it expires then we cannot renew it as we have to be in the UK at the time. Has anyone else come across this quirk or am I being misled?

I was told this as well.
I couldn’t understand why and also thought if I’m just paying by credit card or indeed bank transfer from my UK bank online how would they know where you were.
Look forward to reading some more informative reply’s.

Until you have a big claim and they ask for proof of travel dates.

Yes I can see that and fully understand the point you are making but unless the insured is trying to renew once they have suffered a loss I.e trying to fiddle a claim I just can’t think of a good reason why you just can’t renew.
I‘m pretty sure the insurance industry have used the rule for some reason but I can’t understand why?
Probably I’m just to thick!

yes it is true but nonsense.Like saying my van insurance isn't valid as it automatically renews whilst I am in the UK. As does the house ins.

You have just stated why, to prevent fraud.

Probably aimed at single trip cover and have not altered the T&C for annual cover.

The conditions in my policy state that the policy must be taken out before trip starts, however, they will allow renewal in the course of a trip if the same level of cover is taken as the original policy and that are advised before travel.
I think most insurers will renew an existing policy but they won’t initiate a new policy once you have left UK.

That makes sense to me. But in this case I will be abroad when this 12 months comes to an end and I simply want the next year to begin. The person I spoke to suggested taking a one trip policy to cover the entire trip which would mean for the first half I would have two policies active, the annual and the one trip. I asked if that would mean two pay-outs if I needed to claim, but you can guess the answer 😠.

I think I would try and speak to somebody else…..! Is there nothing in your policy docs which explains renewals whilst abroad?

Spev, at the end of those terms it states you can’t renew if you outside of the UK!
This in direct contradiction to all the previous fluff saying how easy it is etc.
I’m still no wiser.
I can‘t stand why insurance companies make life so hard.

We used to have a similar problem when we worked for British Forces Germany. For many years I had a UK policy, but then they changed the rules to say journeys had to start/end in UK. I told them they were taking the wee and being prejudice against UK Crown workers. They stuck to their guns, I switched to German insurer, their loss.

I'm in the same situation with Staysure. Never considered it would be a problem - our annual policy expires on 31 August next year just a week into our proposed French jaunt. I think I'll get on the case now as all the numerous emails I get from them indicate how helpful they are......we'll see:mad:

Think I've found it! Page 10 of our policy docs. (annual multi trip) states

"any trip that had already begun when you
purchased this insurance will not be covered,
except where you renew an existing Staysure
annual multi-trip policy with the same level
of cover prior to its expiry, which fell due for
renewal during the trip"

I suppose this ensures we insure with them next year too. Not really too upset about that......until I see the renewal premium.
All the same - I'll double check with them. Don't trust insurance companies - they will use any excuse not to pay out.

They don't at the renewal, but, if you make a claim you have to declare when you left the UK, time away and booked return date.

I've claimed and didn't even have to give any receipts but they may ask if its a big claim.
I had to show receipt for hotel and car hire when claiming from ADAC when I used them...BUSBY..

ADAC! I'm guessing that was sometime ago? In any event ADAC is German and may do things a little differently.
