Hello Digital Nomads,

Can anyone recommend a freebie programme suitable for remotely accessing our business laptop while away? Both are Windows machines and it’s not going to be intensive sessions, just being able to sort out the inevitable glitches that will occur in my absence.

TeamViewer is free for personal use, windows have remote access as well but never used it myself.

The Pro versions of Windows 10 and 11 has built in the Remote Desktop Connection app (RDC)

The receiving machine needs to be on (make sure that it doesn't hibernate / shut down), and connected to it's office network. There are also settings needed on that receiving machine so it can accept the remote connection: Select Settings (the cog thingy) > System > Remote Desktop and set to on.

You will need a VPN or similar set up allowing you remote access into your office network, and that connection needs to be running on your local PC into the office. On your local machine simply start the RDC app, select the machine you are connecting to (you'll have to remember it's name) and then log in normally. You can do most stuff remotely effectively seeing the screen of your remote computer on your local machine. Remember before closing the local RDC to have logged off the remote machine rather than just disconnect, but whatever you do don't select the shutdown option or that machine will turn off and then you need to be able to phone a friend to restart it (which was a major pain in the butt during Covid when there was no friend in the office).

Bit lateral here but why not take the business laptop with you?

You beat me to it. I was about to ask the same question.

We are a micro business of six including two working directors and it will remain in our unit because there are others who will be using it for mundane chores such as issuing invoices while I’m away sunning it in Greece for 8 weeks! I have access to cloud based accounts and emails but need the remote so I can get on and deal with anything controversial that might arise that they need some help with - hopefully nothing!

My wife uses team viewer to log into her mum's computer and sort out whatever problems she's managed to create. It was however tricky when she had somehow managed to disable the mouse so couldn't open team viewer at her end!

Thanks to all who mentioned TeamViewer. (y)

Very easy to download and set up and it’s looking to be perfect for my needs.

NOOOOOOOO. teamviewer keeps bugging you to upgrade and whatever you do, dont subscribe, the contract is a bugger. I am anti teamviwer can you tell LOL.

google remote desktop is good and easy.

No intention of subscribing and for the limited access I’ll require I can handle a few emails and/or notifications, but thanks for the warning. I’ll have a look at the Google gizmo as well though.

? You’ve lost me. I already have another laptop and we don’t need another for the office (plus the guys have their own tablets for mobile work). I just need to link in if needed to assist with anything. The programme mentioned above appears to provide me with that facility and is at my favourite price! ;)

Oh I see your taking a computer but wanted the software I get it now. Teamviewer allows access to someone else's computer you need to be invited given a code and you can take control
I hope this is what you were looking for. I have used this system many times and it works 💪
