Greetings all,

A question, particularly for those amongst us galloping towards their 3 score years and 10. (and ongoing thereafter)

Do the DVLA send out reminders?

I ask because at hurtling towards 73yrs and the end of my first C1 extension, I have no memory of receiving a reminder (notwithstanding the fact that I'm two months on from applying for a new C1)

Normally get one 3 months before, don't forget if you apply 56 days or less before the due date you need a new photo

I am sending my first one off when we get home from Portugal but to date not received any reminder from DVLA that my licence needs to be renewed🤔

Thing is, I sent off my C1 renewal on or about 24th Feb.
I would imagine that that date, being 2 months before my recent extant licence expired, would precede a reminder.

After all the horror stories on here re DVLA, I am hopeful that the lack of reminder might? just mean, 'Oh! We've got an application. We don't need to send one'

Fortunately I don't need the new licence this year and I'll rely on S88. I'm certainly not holding my breath for them to come to a decision (by themselves) that I can have another licence.

I’m hopeful that mine will be with them between 90 & 56 days prior to my birthday however concerned about the reported backlogs that by the time they open it the 56 day guideline will be well gone so stuck a photo in just in case 🤞🤞🤞🤞😊

I’m on a 3 year restricted licence because of my MS .My licence runs out next week.I received the renewal forms just over a month ago and sent them back recorded .
I haven’t heard anything and have tried ringing but you don’t even get put on hold it was just cutting off.
I tied again this morning and managed to get through but was on hold for 15 minutes.
Apparently mine is on the system but she couldn’t tell me how long it will take to be issued.
She did tell me that as it is on the system I can still drive under section 88 as long as my GP says I am fit to drive. She is sending out a letter stating that I can drive if my GP ok’s it.
I have appointment with GP on Friday morning and as nothing has changed with my MS GP should pass me fit to drive.🤞

The part that interested me in your post is this
"She did tell me that as it is on the system I can still drive under section 88 as long as my GP says I am fit to drive. She is sending out a letter stating that I can drive if my GP ok’s it."

I've raised this before and been poo pooed by Funsters. "As long as the GP says I am fit to drive"
My take on that is that your (or my) GP should be consulted in order to be afforded s88 status. How would he/she be able to judge your fitness post some incident?

That is why I am going into the surgery as I haven’t seen the GP since before lockdown apart from a telephone consultation for something not related to my MS.

Anyone who's ever requested a copy of their medical notes from their GP will know that what is said, by either the patient or the GP, is not always what's written down correctly....if at all. One of the glaring errors on my notes was what my GP 'thought' I was thinking, rather than what I'd actually said. There are a lot of errors on my notes, which could have had awful consequences. In the event of an incident and an insurance company requesting information from your GP, the old adage will rule; "If it's not written down, it didn't happen". If your GP says you're ok to drive, get it in writing. It may cost you but it could cost you a whole load more if you can't prove that's what they've said. Just because they say it, doesn't mean it will be recorded correctly on your notes.

Have an eye test well before the medical, Specsavers charged me £10 to fill in the form.

A lot of doctors can do the eye test with the medical, so no need to have a separate eye test. Check with the doctor when making the medical appointment.

Greetings all,

I got a reminder letter for my renewal at 73 but didn’t action it straight away which was a BIG mistake. When i got around to it, I found that I could not renew online as it said that I could only do it online if more than 60 days left on the date, which by this time there was not.
So I had to do it by post, beginning of February and have not yet received an acknowledgment that they have received it but Royal Mail has the signed for date. The licence has of course expired now so back on Section 88 once again.

I did include a covering letter surrendering my C1 so hopefully next time I can do it online even with my very recent history!
I have not been told that I am not fit to drive when recently discharged, but I agree it is not the same as having a positive GP letter.

Just to say I got my reminder today for my second renewal for July13, so will need to get my arse into gear pronto, to retain my C1 entitlement,

I’ve just received letter from dvla saying I can drive under section 88 until my licence is processed as long as GP states I am fit to drive.
I saw my GP yesterday who has given me a letter stating that in her opinion I am fit to drive.(y)

Had my medical on the 6 May and put in the post for the 7May registered, had a phone call from the DVLA on
Tuesday the 7 June with a query easily resolved on the phone and my new licence arrived today,
so all things considered IMO the DVLA are processing the C1 renewals pretty quickly,

Sent my C1 70yrs re application off 3/05/22 and got new licence back in eight days😊👍lost a couple of months on old licence but no worries😊

Still nothing for me, sent 11 feb. They did say it might reach top of pile by September!

Sent my application off end of January for renewal 11th Feb, yes I realise now I should have sent it earlier. I attended Specsavers and paid £15 to fill in the DVLA form I have just received a letter (yesterday) from the DVLA saying that I must attend an officially appointed Specsavers (not all Specsavers are the same :lipssealed:) ideally within 7 days of this letter but no longer than 28 days or my license will be revoked.:banghead:
Three phone calls later I eventually find an approved Specsavers that had a cancelation for a D4 examination:rollingeyes: and can fit me in before the 28 days.
Bloody farcical.

Regarding DVLA’s advice that under Section 88 we can drive if our GP ok’s it . . . I had such a letter so raised a query with my GP surgery. GP rang me to say very firmly that GPs do NOT say whether people are fit to drive or not. He did concede that if nothing had changed then I should be OK . . .

Just because I'm fit to drive right now, tomorrow morning when I go to get in my car to drive it somewhere, I could possibly not be and the law says I have to test my blood glucose and it must be at or above 5 in order to commence driving. The Law relies on me to test and make that decision - not my GP. he could say he's known me X years and has never had reason yet to advise me not to drive and still does not today.

I'm on my second renewal, himself on his third, each time we have received renewal forms for standard license, so that means a half hour queue in post office which is now in WH Smith's.

You can get the forms online they come within a couple of weeks from gov.uk😊

Hi, I'm 70 in August. Am i right to be using forms D47P & D4 for my C1 renewal and do i also in addition have to renew my complete licence? Also how long before my 70th do/should i apply? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Don't need the D47P you need a D2, you can order a renewal pack from DVLA or get them from a main Post Office (if you can find one😊).
You can have the medical up to 120 days before and apply for licence up to 90 days before, if less than 56 days you will need to send a new photo.
No charge even if sending a new photo, info on D2 is confusing.

That is like an MOT it’s only valid at the time of examination any deterioration would be down to the owner of the vehicle or licence holder.

We as drivers have to take personal responsibility if our conditions worsen.
