We've just returned from a week touring northern Scotland and found a couple of ticks on our dog, looks like they are active quite early. Fortunately our dog is given a monthly treatment but please keep your pets protected.

So dog still got ticks despite monthly treatment?

Think it depends on what you use.
My 2 Jacks who are 15 now have only ever had 1 tick each.
They go for walks every day and have been all over Europe with us running in the long grass and never picked any up.
We use Nexguard on them every month.

Most dogs down here on the Mediterranean wear Scalibor collars as these also protect against leishmaniasis which is spread by sandflies and is spreading faster each year. Well worth the small cost as leish is uncurable. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canine_leishmaniasis

Are dogs able to wear these if they have had their regular flea/tick treatment do you know?
I know they don’t advise a dog to have a flea collar if they have had monthly treatment.

If we let muttly off his lead he just stands looking confused so it will lessen the problem of ticks. Because of his double coat it’s going to be hard to find any ticks on him other than his face or legs.
We have a thing for removing ticks in the motorhome we bought for our last dog because he loved mooching in the long grass.

Yes I'm afraid they do but the treatment kills the ticks, however, the ticks die still attached so need to be carefully removed either with a tick removing tool or by twisting the tick gently anti clockwise, best to hold the tick with some kitchen towel though.

Ours were picking up ticks in the highlands in February - we try to pick them off before they bite. If they bite they die (dogs are treated) but they can still cause problems especially if they are around the rims of the eyes (one of ours seems susceptible to this)

Ours have the monthly treatment. We did try a Scalibor collar on Meg once and she went barmy trying to get it off at one stage we worried that she might have a fit.

Our little Lily nearly died due to a tick.

We were in France and been for a walk along the edge of woodland, a stream etc, she and the other dogs had snuffled in some 'tufts' at the side of the water and we didn't know that a tick had latched onto her despite checking her afterwards - it must've been very small and well hidden. It was feeding on her all night until we found it in the morning once it had gorged and become visible so we removed it with a tick-tool. She seemed to be okay and we thought nothing of it, being a Sunday we had a later start than other days but knew something was wrong shortly after we'd driven off - Lily always fretted and shivered when we travelled and she wasn't doing so, she was quite chilled, way too chilled in fact. As a consequence when we got to a village with a vet's practice we phoned and managed to relay our concern to the vet's daughter who was visiting and spoke English (her vet Mum spoke very little) - the vet came to the surgery with her daughter who translated both ways.

By this time Lily had become very, very pale and lethargic and was immediately put on a drip and given lots of meds, we were there for a good while and eventually as she'd had all the treatment the vet could offer at that point we were told to take her 'home' (ie to the MH), keep an eye on her and call if she deteriorated, but if not to bring her back in the morning for more treatment. She survived the night without any issues and we went back to the vet first thing in the morning who was very pleased to see Lily as she was surprised that she had survived! As she had made an improvement she was given more treatment and we were then given meds to take away with us and told to see a vet immediately if she deteriorated, fortunately she didn't and made a good recovery and when we got back home and took her to our vet she was pretty much back to normal but given another week's meds just to be safe.

What appears to have happened wasn't to do with the tick 'drinking' Lily's blood but how it it able to do so, to get the blood flowing ticks inject a type of thinning agent into the host and this is sometimes infected with parasites, bacteria etc which are then transmitted directly into the dog's blood stream. This is what the vet believed to have happened and hence throwing loads of treatment at Lily initially without wasting time doing lots of tests first to check exactly what the issue was, thank goodness she did as if we'd had to wait for test results she would've been a goner.

All four dogs we have had have regular Advantix drops for flea & tick and wear a Scalibor collar as well for extra precaution against ticks and protection against sand flies during their seasons. I do know certain constituents in some drops are contraindicated with concurrent use if a collar though - I'll check if Mrs. B. had more info..

We started to see them here about 4wks ago, nothing too bad as yet so hopefully winter was cold enough to reduce their numbers. Once it gets regularly above 10º and it’s also damp them bingo the population will explode😲

We gave up on spot-on type treatments (Advantix, Frontline etc) as they are hardly effective these days, even Frontline plus does very little. I usually remove most of them once we’re back home, most can combed off quite easily, this morning it was 14 so still low numbers here, can be 100-120 a day on the spaniel once they get going (end April or so).

Bravecto is the poison we prefer, chuffing expensive but far more effective that all the others we’ve tried and so far i think we’ve used almost every product.

I don't use prescription flea and tick treatments as dog reacts badly to them. I just add Billy No Mates to food.

The occasional tick that does attach I just remove with a O'Tom Tick remover. Never encountered any fleas.

Also don't like these toxic chemicals washing off into rivers.

Little creepy barstewards, I wouldn't care she's got really short hair.
