Had Bedford Dormobile with the sliding doors in the 60s,ex RAF..10 seater I think and we went to Sweden in a Commer 12 seater ex Britsh Rail in the 80s...Good fun at the time.BUSBY.

I am glad I came to motorhoming two generations of designs later.

Did anyone long- or full-time in those? They really were 'campervans' weren't they? But they got some of you started in the pastime early, not like me at 67, but I was able to start with one with old man's comforts.

1959? Bedford swb ca minibus, we had it about 1969 and used it for camping and venture scout trips followed by austin j2 ex ambulance fitted out with old coach seats in rear.

Graduated to very second hand Bedford cf camper van 1981, it was luxury after camping!

They had a strong routs engine

Started my motorhoming in a Bedford Bedouin from CIM in Poole. Built in 1973, bought by my father in 1974 from Stevens Garage in West London (from their hire fleet after hiring one the year before) and inherited by me in 1981. Brilliant van!!!

The first photo is from 1977 and the girl standing to the left is now my wife - she was 12 at the time :)

There are lot of modern motorhome like that on Fiat "camper" chassis.
DP
and my 2011 Ford Transit based Tribute T620. I haven't tipped it over - yet!

http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-5...0001&campid=5338547443&icep_item=114395163699 - for those maybe wanting a bit of nostalgia; not for me however, I had the trauma of owning one back in 1992 and I couldn't get rid of it quickly enough! 17 mpg driving along in a leaking colander with sliding doors that would not reliably stay shut and, and, and...not for me thanks!

Yes, And every base vehicle was a "Rot Box" too!!.:(:(. MOT fails where legion, Like much of the vehicles of the era, they where rarely given any protection against the salt and moisture etc;! and with designed in crap traps. A pal had one (Commer I think) was the base vehicle. every year it had to be welded somewhere just to pass MOT!. by the time he sold it (scraped I think), the chassis was like Triggers Broom!!.

Lived in this one for six months, VW 1965 LHD Kemperink. This one had been customised in the seventies with arches and tag axle. The Kemperink was a stretched VW van built by a Dutch company with a bigger body put on. They used the split screen and the bay window model. Not many about. When I owned this one there was only two in the country. Sorry about picture quality it’s a pic of a pic.
