Help /advice please. We have had our 2009 2.3 fiat ducato maxi engine remapped to produce more torque. All the filters were changed at recent service. We are now towing a smart car. Whenever the engine is under load (even when not towing car) we are getting black smoke from exhaust. Why ? Should we get the engine put back to factory settings ? We don’t want to make life unpleasant for anyone behind us .
Thanks sailorman

As above, more power requires more fuel, more fuel requires more air, not enough air and some fuel is unburnt hence black smoke.

Thank you.
I’ve just spoken to company that did remap. They are going to come to me, plug in diagnostics. Hopefully not to me personally !😂I’d definitely fail !! Tell me problem and sort it.
Thanks to all for speedy responses.

Least the remap company is standing by their product and coming out to you to rectify. Hope all goes well.

Owners who have deliberately removed particulate filters to improve the car’s performance face a bill of £1,000 or more, or having to scrap the car. Older diesels made before DPFs were built-in will not face the new emissions test.

Smoke from the exhaust

In addition, testers will check for smoke of any colour coming from the exhaust, and all MoT testers are required to use new diesel smoke meters that conform with the tougher standards.

My 2.8 jtd 2004 gave out a lot of black smoke under pressure , had a tDi tuning box fitted . After some investigation a diesel engineer found the turbo was not working correctly fitted a new pin In the turbo £30 it now goes great and no smoke

Hi I’ll definitely report back next week once engineer has paid me a visit.
Happy days

The only pin I can think of would be the one connecting the wastegate to the actuator. If the old pin had fallen out there would be no boost control which would manifest as black smoke. A new pin would be sixpence

I think you should upgrade your mechanic to Engineer. He actually made a part, not replacing whole assembly.
No he can't be an engineer if he didn't need a CAD drawing for it or suck air in through his teeth and say it'll be 16 weeks to make and you'll have to take 50 of 'em. ;)

(Sorry - sore point for me as I have the task of trying to source suppliers for small batches of various parts for my vintage British motorbike club).

My old (2007) Transit work van started getting smoky, which was disappointing as it was fairly low mileage and serviced annually. The technician in a Ford garage told me to put in a tank of the more expensive diesel every other fill up, I wasn’t confident this would make much difference, but I couldn’t have been more wrong, do try it.

"Italian" tune up sometimes does the trick!

I think your right the £30 charge included the diesel specialist engineer cost as well . I have used him since owning the motorhome 2008 so a little loyalty goes both ways . Paul Chamberlain at Northants Motorhome Services .
