May I recommend The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe. Hardly a cheerful read but at least the rich and the poor were in the mire together.

I think I'd go for something more cheerful! Good book though read it years ago.On the Beach... Neville Shute.. Don't know how you spell it.. . But the b/w film is better.
Was it not Jane Duncan? And I have hard copies ( very tatty n old ) of all the Betty Macdonalds and several My friend ones if you need to borrow some after the lockdownKirsten thanks for reminding me about Lilian Beckwith will have a look for my Kindle, not seen any in the charity shops for ages, I also enjoyed the 'My Friend' series but can't remember who wrote them.
Hilary Mantel the Thomas Cromwell trilogy if you like fact based fiction from Henry VIII time their is none better. Wolf Hall, Bring up the Bodies and Mirror and the Light.
Two other excellent authors for historical fiction are Sharon Penman with her welsh trilogy and her Plantagenet series and Colleen McCullough and her 5 book masters of Rome series. Should keep you going till the end of the week.
