Hello everyone, does anyone know where the relay is for the fridge, Autotrail X250, year 2011. Our problem is sometimes the fridge works on the move on the 12volt and sometimes it doesnt. was away for 3 months and the working on 12v was intermittent. Coming home from Dover, which is a 5 hour drive for us, fridge was on 3.9 when set off, was on 13 degrees when we got home, wasnt opened, did not stop on way home. We have had the engine running at home and the 12 volt , actually 13.5 is getting to the fridge. So could it be something to do with the relay. Thanks in advance.

If you see 13.5v at the fridge it is possible that the fridge 12v element has failed (normally the long cable from engine-fridge drops a couple of volts) or you are measuring the fridge gas igniter / fridge light supply. You can check which is which by turning off the engine - if you are measuring the correct 12v feed it will disappear once the engine is switched off. Once you know you have the correct 12v feed remove it from the terminal block (engine stopped). With your meter set to Ohms then measure across the wires that lead off to the 12v element. You should see 1.3 to 2 ohms on the meter if the element is OK and no reading (or infinity) if it's faulty.

The only relay involved is the one that connects the alternator (or engine battery) to the fridge when the engine is running. If you are seeing 12v at the fridge (on the correct terminals) the relay is OK. The relay is usually incorporated in the van control panel these days or (as in the past) in the engine compartment.

Our fridge is connected to the habitation batteries and the switching is done by the fridge control circuits, the alternator D+ goes straight to the back of the fridge, Dometic 7 series.

Forgot that one  so is mine. Some sense is starting to prevail amongst manufacturers so a decent-size single cable will both charge the habitation batteries and supply the fridge when the engine is running. Previously two cables were used.

All we need now is kitchen sinks with sloping bottoms and life will be perfect.

fridge relay, along with the split charge relay, is NORMALLY under the bonnet close to the battery.

And i agree with tonyidle, if theres power at the fridge then the relay is ok and possibly its the heating element.

Thanks for all the replies, a bit confusing as in the manual it says if the element fails it should let me know by flashing up a symbol and nothing is showing.
