Good evening to you all me and the wife are thinking of doing a run to France next year never been to France so total new to motorhomeing aboard any suggestions on where to go and what routes to take we like walking and pubs on a evening any help would be appreciated 😀

hi the answer will depend on your preferences for type of stop overs. Sites, Aires, Free loading!! and how far and which region.

lots of members post blogs of routes and places stayed as an example look at this thread from Lenny HB ( other members threads are available  ) live at the moment :

You will get more recommendations than you can shake a stick at, but my advice would be, just do it, you won't be disappointed wherever you go, bars and cafes in every village but will mostly close at nine o clock so you will have to be early.

Well if pushed for a couple of weeks I would just turn right off the tunnel and follow the the coast.

We have traveled on loads of routes going south on the west side and right across the German side, but unless you have something special in mind it's a hard decision to make for someone else.

if you not been before then a good time to cross is a sunday morning the first time. few trucks on the road most French in bed late etc so road reasonably easy to get you started on the wrong side of the road.

as chaser has suggested you could simply turn left and follow the coast to Brittany,

again it depends how long you are going to travel for and how much driving you want to do. France as you know is approx 3 times the size of the UK.

We follow the weather. We find 2-3 (very occasionally 4) nights in one place most relaxing. How about a night in Normandy then head down to the Loir and the Loire région. You don’t need to book.

Pop through the few hundred pages of the photo of the day thread and see what you like.
Make notes and note where they are and maybe make a map.
Then try to keep your tour down to a small area
You may want just view April to October posts

Once off the boat/tunnel park up and look at the weather in France,.. go where the sun shines…..

Download “search for sites” Campercontact and park for night and enjoy…. It really is that easy..👍🏼

We are going to Macon next August for the first time....via lots of unplanned stops on Aires and Passion France spots. Get Search for sites app and Passion France. When are you going?💖🚐

When do you expect to go?
Avoid trad hol times, esp last week July and all Aug if you can.
I've never booked ahead and never had any difficulty finding sites with space.
The roads are far less crowded than in U.K.
Be aware that you can't exchange Calor cylinders in France.
If the 'lead person' i.e. the name of the booker on the ticket is over 60 (or a student or registered disabled) you get 20% discount off the published fares on the Newhaven - Dieppe crossing (4 hours) but you have to book by phone.

Its just not an issue, simply book a ferry or the tunnel and get on with it, you'll not find stopping or emptying or filling an issue.

Not so sure about the night life, but we like walking.
A lot Is subject to when you are travelling? and how far you want to walk? How sweaty you are comfortable with!
we done walks where 3 litres each of drinking water was not enough for a day walk.

that is not the best time to travel without some sort of booking IMHO, and I hope you got deep pockets as the prices of sites are extortionate at that time, and any free aires or most not free are likely to be full.

we never book anything once we are across and follow the sun or generally amble around but not late july and august, that is the main French holiday break.

The Loire Valley is about 275 miles from Calais, and that will take you a range of Chateaux, large and medium towns/cities where you can walk, cycle and sight see. It was the region I chose for my first visit to France in 1976.

Possibly best for you to look at a map, decide how far you want to drive, and what type of sightseeing you would like. And don't be tempted to try to cover huge distances!

Check out the Aire in the pretty village of Vinzelles, near Macon - nice spot, adjacent vineyards. Handy for the autoroute and not far from Lidl. :giggle:

Check the forecast, follow the weather, that's why you are there.

France will be busy July August as that's their holiday season, I suggest keeping away from the coast as that will be busy, in 2 weeks you don't want to travel too far , As suggested the Loire valley is good and you would maybe get as far as La Rochelle, The Champagne trail and a lot of the WW1 sites are also doable, keep your travelling down to 100 mile a day and make sure you park up early afternoon.
<Broken link removed> France sept 2007 is the Champagne trail
<Broken link removed> Europe 2019 was July. France 2018 late August
