After coming down from the Steall falls in the Glen Nevis gorge, we headed down to that old safe haven of the Red Squirrel campsite in Glencoe.
Heads up folks, but sadly it’s now permanently closed!
Can’t say why on here as it may incriminate someone

, but suffice to say it was a bit of a shock. Fingers crossed someone new will take it on and open it back up, as it’s a bit of a legendary little place.

Great campsite. What a shame. Never stayed there in the motorhome but stayed many times in a tent, when motorcycling. The walk to the Clachaig inn was all part of the experience.

Anyone remember The Little Wolves playing at the Clachaig Inn? Those were the days. One night they arrived very late as the whole road was on fire due to a fuel spillage.

Just looked at the blurb, for me with three kids and dog it would be £67.50 per night and with no EHU so couldnt care less if it is open or shut.
That amount would do us at least 6 weeks camping. :giggle:

Gem of a site HOWEVER IMV too expensive... if not for the Clachaig Inn we would not have gone at all

Stayed there for the first time in the early 70s. Then just a basic campsite. I have vivid memories of the owner trying to control the avalanche of midges and horse flies descending from the hillside with a backpack diesel smoke generator. Totally ineffective. The second time a few years later tenting with the climbing club at Easter. Drank in the Clachaig absolutely packed, engaged in a one way conversation with a very drunk Glaswegian. Didn't understand a word.
The following morning staggered out of the tent being sick and traversed the Aonach Eagach.

Do you remember the gas heated showers in those "cubicles" and the water tap through the tree?

I think most of you are looking back through rose tinted beer goggles?
Good pub but describing the site as basic is charitable

Pretty sure this is the same campsite I stayed at in May 2006 and it was hammering down, about 20 of us did Land's End to John O'Groats on Lambrettas and Vespas, great times. Only 6 of us braved the camping while the others all chickened out and found a B&B
Bloody great memories though.
