Hi All, can I ask if anyone, post Brexit has imported a new Motorhome from Germany, I am being told rightly that I need to pay the dealer in Germany the 19% Vat, and then pay the 20% Vat in the UK during the import process. Once I send I think the dealer in Germany confirmation that it has been imported to the UK, someone will pay me the 19% German Vat back. All sounds easy but after 2 weeks of trying to find out what documents are required to recover the German 19% and who I send then too I am no nearer.

Has anyone been through this process post Brexit many thanks.

I have not imported a new motorhome but I'd have assumed that you need to contact the dealer in Germany with proof you have paid VAT?

I have only ever imported VAT free but from others that have done it the normal arrangement if the dealer charges VAT is once you send proof of your VAT payment the dealer refunds it. Sometimes they take a separate payment to make it easier.

The official route of claiming via their tax office is much more complicated and could take months to get it back. As long as you deal with a dealer who is used to selling for export it won't be a problem.

We imported in 2019. Dealer 'held' the vat element against my credit card, in the same way that hotels do. Not actually charged to the card.

On proof of UK vat payment he cancelled the held payment.
