Hi.
Our 2007 Hymer B614SL (3.0l Fiat) has done just over 100k miles and the clutch is now slipping, although it’s drivable.
I’m scratching around trying to find many suitable garages that can deal with a 4.5t ‘A’ class in the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire area or around.
Any suggestions / recommendations are really appreciated.
Thanks in anticipation.
Barry

Appreciated Silver-Fox. I’ve gone through those on ‘Yell’ and have a small number of quotes ranging from £1,350 to £2,450.
I suppose I’m looking for a ‘try these, they did a great job for me at a fair price’.

Bloody hell are these gold plated clutches ?

Maybe worth traveling and making a few days of it.

You tried Dave Newel on here.
He’s well regarded.

As Silver-Fox suggest's Dave Newel, his contact details are on this site, and he has a vehicle lift which will take you Hymer, and our Hymer Starline, also 4.6 tonne , has settled on that lift a few times in the past.

There is a campsite very local to his garage, and they will book you in if you ask. What do you do whilst the work is done, well Telford shopping centre is only a bus ride away, and you could visit some of the museum's at preferable rates, if you speak to Jackie!!!

As all of above, Dave Newell will give you a good quote, and is highly recommended. About 140 mile round trip to Nottingham. One phone call is all it takes.? ??

Don't forget to specify a new slave cylinder which is contained in the bellhousing.

There may be other parts which should be replaced such as new flywheel or reskimming of flywheel. Expect our more mechanical experts will be able to provide a minimum checklist of parts required.

Not sure it will fit your van. Borg and beck hkf1054 is a single mass flywheel and clutch kit. Marketed as stronger with better heat disapation than standard dual mass flywheel.
I have not tried it so have no experience of it, just noted its existance for the future....

Call fiat camper freephone and hopefully you'll get Amanda who will find a fiat pro / commercial garage to help you out. May not be cheapest BUT
If yours is a comfortmatic it will require a fiat code reader/programmer to setup the clutch and gearbox. Aftermarket kit just doesn't have the apps to talk to the box.

That’s interesting, why does the clutch and gearbox need setting up?

Thanks. It’s not a comformatic box. The £2,450 quote is from a Fiat / Iveco garage.

That’s interesting, why does the clutch and gearbox need setting up?

Had a recent issue, (3.0l Tandem axle MH)

Comfortmatic wouldn't go into gear from startup, Most times you could turn on the ignition and select 1st, revers & neutral but as soon as you started the engine gear selection operation wasn't available and the gearbox warning light came on. If you managed to get it in gear with the engine running then it would be ok till switched off or you opened the drivers door (kicks it out of gear, safety feature)

Local garage came out with aftermarket code reader and said there are no fault codes present despite faults showing on the dash. They could see gear selector operation door interlock etc but no fault codes.

Arranged for recovery to Commercial garage in Swindon. MISTAKE. Left it there and had a call next day to say they were unable to fix it.

At this point thinking this is going to be expensive.

So contacted Fiat (Italy freephone) and Fiat Pro garage in Gloucester. (Motus) MH taken there. They used a Fiat reader/programmer and put the clutch/Gearbox through a clutch position learning cycle. (guess that's determining the required throw on the servos) Assume the gearbox input shaft was spinning so the system thought the clutch had not disengaged.

Cost of investigation and MOT I think was about £300-350, looked for invoice but cant find it. All OK now very relieved as rumour had it a the servo pack for the gearbox is circa £2.5k.

Also found out that all fiat garages do not carry a proprietary FIAT reader. I.E the Fiat pro van centre in Swindon hires one in from Fiat when needed????

Because it's all electronically controlled.

Yes I get that Lenny but it’s the clutch and box controlled.

All your doing is changing the mechanical bit of it.

Surely your not touching the box apart from removing it.

Yes I understand that but yours was computer issue that needed resetting.

This is mechanical exchange of parts.

I’m happy to be corrected but that would be like resetting the ecu on a car because you changed the spark plugs etc

You have to run a resetting procedure through diagnostics after replacing the clutch assembly. The box needs to relearn various measurements and status from the new clutch. Another for hydraulics. There are other procedures that can test if everything is working as it should be following replacement.

And there are items that have to be reset through engine ECUs on many modern vehicles if replaced. On the Ducato multijet for instance, replacement of injectors, phonic wheel, rail pressure sensor, lambda sensor, MAF sensor, DPF pressure sensor, etc.

I'm a newbie
The guy I bought my MoHo off usually only deals in American RV's and he uses a guy in Hinckley called Jon Clarke. He's been going there for years for any/all mechanical work.

Note that I can't vouch for him myself, I was going to get him to do my cambelt but he was too busy when I wanted it doing (so I did it myself) but if he can work on American RV's I'm sure he could do yours too.

Edit - Should've read that last post...
