Rear suspension beefing up. (1 Viewer)

We are carrying my disability scooter on the back of our hymer but could do with improving the rear suspension. What do people think is the best way. I’ve read that it’s better too buy beefier springs rather than fit an add on air system. Any thoughts please?

Have to get back to you it’s a fiat Ducati and I did read that we should upgrade to fiat maxi springs.

So it's on a Fiat chassis with leaf springs?

What Hymer is it model & year?
It’s 2005 and it’s a B class it has a fiat chassis and leaf springs. We spread the weight of the disability scooter by putting the batteries under the table at the front and the seat and back wheels in the garage and the front wheels on a rear rack.

I am getting the idea that it is one of those scooters that break down into several parts, thus enabling it to be transported in the car boot or similar. If I am right then the total weight is quite low, so should not warrant suspension upgrades. Having said that a 2005 Fiat could probably benefit from some sort of improvement to the suspension, regardless of the scooter.
My scooter weighs well in excess of 100kg, now that would require serious thought about how and where to position it for transportation.

That's unusual a B class on a Fiat Chassis but Hymer do strange things at times.

Adding air bags improve the ride and make the van much more stable and is a cheap option so worth trying.
If you need to increase the rear axle load I would have a word with Mick at SAP he will advice what is achieveable and best for you.

Hi Geoff, it weighs about 60kg. You are dead right that the suspension would probably benefit anyway from an upgrade. We have carried the scooter several times as previously described(in bits) but it would be very much more useful if we could disassemble it less, hence the question. Thanks for replying.

If your rear springs aren’t quite up to the job and the rear end sags a bit when loaded, then that’s the best place to start from for adding air assistance.
Adding air assist will give you some element of adjustability, pumping it up or letting it down as required.
Fitting up rated springs will give just one setting and it’d be difficult to choose the correct spring rate for your needs.

I've a 2006 Ducato based van on the Maxi chassis, and adding airbags at the rear made a huge difference to how the van handles - much less roll in bends, much more stable passing trucks on the motorway. In my case (it depends on more than just adding airbags) I was able to up-plate to 4 tons and significantly increase the rear axle loading. I wouldn't bother changing springs personally, unless yours are very tired,

Jones springs in the midlands are the cheapeat source of upgraded rear leaf springs
