I have a Domentic Air Conditioner B2200 has anyone ever re-gased a sealed air conditioner using a saddle valve to top up there system.

I looked into this a couple of years ago. Apparently only a Dometic agent will do it, but there isn't one anywhere near me so I've never bothered. We hardly ever use the A/C anyway; it does work but not as efficiently as it used to.

Also be interested in any replies.

Thank you for your reply, I’m going to do this myself and I will give a full report afterwards. :)

I know a refrigeration engineer that adapted and regassed the air conditioner on his own van. Did a great job as it worked better than new afterwards

Hi
I have the Dometic Fresh light, i contacted Dometic and was told that it was a sealed unit and does not require servicing of any description

Any refrigeration engineer can regas any compressor system, AC or refrigeration. All systems are sealed, some don't have gauge access points but you can fit a 1/4 line tap valve to check the system, then if it is short you can braze in a 1/4 schraeder valve.
If they say it can't be done they're either lying or they aren't fridge engineers. (y)

Probably not normally, but old systems do develop refrigerant leaks and they can all be fixed and recharged.

If there turns out to be no gas in the system and you find and fix the leak, remove the line tap and fit one of these in it's place.. These are what the manufacturer fits, when they can be bothered

Do they use the same gas as car a/c units the 134a gas

We have the fresh jet and our instructions says it does need to be topped up so now really confused.

Well I'm going to use a Bullet Piercing LINE TAP VALVE Refrigeration Pipework Copper Tubing 1/4", 5/16" that's what I found on one video on you tube simple to fit. Then it's down to Halfords for refrigerant self top up little at a time. The manufacturers are always saying can't be done but with the right tools easy fix compared to new system. Watch this video

If there is no gas in it ,you need to trace the leak and repair if possible .the system then needs to be vacced out with a vacuum pump to a 30 inch vac and then the regas has to be weighed in with correct gas ,you can fit a vax 1/4 scrader valve witch can be left on the system ,for future service work .thanks steve for recommending me but I would only have time to do it if they came to swansea ,

Ps don't get involved with trying to do it yourself as it's not as easy as the stupid people who post videos ,the system could be choked up and that means a blockage in the system and adding gas just makes it a lot worse

The only time an AC needs topping up (unless it's got a leak of course:eek:) is when it's newly installed, and the pipework is longer than has been allowed for with the factory refrigerant charge. The smallest pipe run I've known is 7m, typically 15m though (y)

PS these are building split AC systems though, van systems are packaged. ie ready to fit and correctly factory charged.

I will keep you all posted as it's worth a punt rather than buying a complete new system. It's not working so what have I got to lose ?

Yes go for it (y) any questions just ask away. First job, stick some gauges on it, or at least a [Blue] suction low side gauge and run the system (that"s if it will run, might not if there's bugger all in it and it has a psessure switch) (y)

It works fine just not getting cold enough so I think just a top up will be ok.?

Might be. Can you see the indoor fins (the evaporator) do they condensate? Or frost? Check all the way across it.

Frost = low pressure and it may indicate low refrigerant level (y)

I will check this out thank you, first I have another job before I start this one.

You might need to run it for 20 min before the ice appears, set the stat (or setting) to minimum so it stays on (y)

Before anything check the condenser fan is running on the roof, it should be blowing warm air out. Blowing cold air could indicate short of refrigerant. Or not running at all would cause the poor performance issue (y)

Update
While testing the air con it stopped working altogether so I’m faced with buying a new model any recommendations towards type’brand etc would be agreat help.
