Is it legal to take pictures of the Armed Forces?
That's an odd question. As they have a public road next to the base why wouldn't it be legal. That being said a lot of maps don't show military bases like the Fylingdes radar base near here. It's huge you can see it from miles away do they really think not having it on a map makes it invisible!!...

I noticed when the bike race passed Fylingdales they "greyed-out" the view of the phased array antenna which I thought was a bit odd as you can drive past on the public road and indeed I have ridden the off road bridalway along the perimeter fence ??

Reminds me of when the tour de France passed through Keighley the TV commentary very wisely went to adverts..... Perfect timing! Only to reappear around about Haworth!!

Cheers James

It makes you wonder if the phrase ," military intelligence " makes any sense! I heard but don't know if its true that the post office tower wasn't on maps at one time as it was a military communication hub!

At Boscombe Down there are signs on the perimeter fence saying no photographyšŸ¤”
Boscombe down has some experimental aircraft fly in and out though, so understandable. I used to travel to various military airshows, and if you were camped locally a week or more before and after, you got some interesting activity, both in the air and by road with stuff not to be on show to the general public.

So don't you think anyone from another country will very easily know what's been flying?
If anyone camped locally can see the aircraft how come they're secret!

I love jets and aircraft and we had to drive past Lakenheath to get to my in-laws for many years and I never saw any aircraft at all for 20 Years .

Then as we solemnly drove to my father in laws funeral 3 years ago we were blessed by a huge presence of f15ā€™s or whatever they were both on the runway and in the air.

My wife felt like it was a sign from her Dad. And maybe it was.

Open secret, yes. But kept away from the general public. The same goes for the mobile missile launchers that are usually on base to counter any threat. Best not to scare the general public, seeing how heavily armed and defended the bases are. We saw stealth aircraft long before they were fully in the public domain

One of the open secrets right now are the stealth drones. Very nimble fighter aircraft that are not constrained by the need for a human pilot or cockpit. Keep your best assets, the highly trained pilots well away from any danger, and they no longer have to pass very strict health testing to enable them to tolerate high G forces in flight. Occasionally video of the drones being tested pops up on the internet, but gets removed quickly

It's not as if other potentially hostile nations are not doing the same, cyber warfare is the future and rapidly replacing large numbers of military

Donna Nook firing range is a few miles awayā€¦.. all sorts of stuff from chinooks, to Apaches to Typhoons and anything in between, attacking the targets. Spotters galore and some superb photos of (concrete) bombs leaving the rack and hitting the targets. Or not. Donna Nook spotters group on Faceacheā€¦ā€¦..

Go to RAF Coningsby almost any day of the week (not weekends though, the RAF closes at weekends) and there will be a car park rammed with folk, some with very long lenses.
Hundreds of pictures posted to Farcebook and other sites.
Some of the really good photos make it into the national papers.
Look out for Clare Hartley pictures, she is super talented.

Richard.

I used to work on Lakenheath from time to time, it's an eye opener seeing everyone walking around with a gun.

Lakenheath is a mini town once you are through security, (empty everying out of the van) there's a cinema, McDonald's, pizza shop, bar, golf course, you name it, it's all there. The company I subbed into had the contracts for USAF Mildenhal and Alconbury

It surprises me that you can stand on the verge of the main road as the planes come into land about 40 feet directly above you . Surely with the trouble they have had with drones in other places this is a disaster waiting to happen.

they had drone issues at civilian airports and called in the American specialists with blocking technology. If anyone was stupid enough to try it on a US airbase, the drone would be shot out of the sky and the idiot if caught would be in super serious trouble

Security around Lakenheath is massive, no one in their tiny mind would try it on that close to the base. Better off trying to take an F15/16 or similar down from a few miles away.

Surprisingly there are signs in other countries around bases specifically banning photos or videos being taken ...i spotted them in greece and in spain . Id be surprised if the uk didn't have that rule but not sure if they do or not.

Edit

Actually I wouldn't be surprised these days ....i think our ancestors would turn in their graves how crap we've become at homeland security.. nearly every successful terrorist attack in this country it turns out that the suspects were being watched by police or were on their rader. So why would we bother lol

Not sure about the Armed Forces however this was RAF Lakenheath.

Security: Base security or MoD police will take an interest in you around the less-easily-accessible points on this guide but are normally okay with you being there once they know what you're up to.

There have in the past been some incidents of base security telling people outside the fence that they are not permitted to take photos except from the approved viewing area. This is nonsense. You are entirely within your rights to walk on the public footpaths and open access land bordering the airfield, and take photographs of aircraft in flight. They can legitimately object to you taking photos of the airfield itself but US security have no powers outside the fence and would need to call the local police to deal with you if they felt you were a genuine security concern. If you are hassled, threatened or lied to in this manner by USAFE security personnel you should complain to the station commander at RAF Lakenheath and also to the local police. The US are after all guests in our country - not the other way round.
